England Deaf Rugby Head Coach has named his men’s squad for the upcoming Amplifon Broadstreet Cup fixture against rivals Wales Deaf.

Following on from the most recent Broadstreet Cup fixture at Sale in April, a 22-6 win for England, Fletcher’s men will be looking to hold on to the trophy with back-to-back victory over Wales for the first time.

With the previous two home fixtures against Wales taking place in the North of England, at Ilkley and Sale respectively, the fixture moves back to the capital, this time hosted by Harlow RFC, the scene of the dramatic England Deaf comeback in the 2nd test during the victorious series win over New Zealand in 2017.

Speaking about his latest squad, Fletcher said “It has been a huge headache to reduce this squad once, but even harder for a second time in order to get our match day 23.
Competition for places has been hotter than ever which is testament to the hard work carried out by all of our players and also the backroom staff.

We have had a solid preparation for this fixture with a convincing win over Northamptonshire Police and a number of fantastic training sessions. Myself and new backs coach, Rhys Morgan, have been hugely impressed with the commitment, ability and passion showed by our players.

The EDRU journey continues and we are looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead. The fixture against Wales is always a tough one but we have set our goals, and everyone is completely focused on the job in hand.”

For the first time in his tenue, Fletcher has been forced to select a squad without regular captain Luke Cheyne, who is set for shoulder surgery next week and therefore misses out on the chance to take to the field. This, however, allows vice-captain Danny Rowland to take the armband on Sunday week, a prospect which he is entirely relishing.

Rowland said “I am absolutely honored to be given the opportunity to lead the team out for the first time, however this isn’t about me, it’s about the team. It is important we work hard for each other and show the intensity and heart we have done over the past couple of years. I am confident with the talent we have in the squad, we will get the win.”

You can see the first ever Amplifon International Fixture between England and Wales at Harlow RFC on Sunday 19th January 2020, with a 14:00 kick off, preceded by the first ever Northern Hemisphere Women’s International between England Deaf Women and Wales Deaf Women at 13:40.

Entry is FREE and all support is welcomed.
