Essex Open 35 Cumberland 55
Despite a spirited performance Essex were eventually well beaten by a strong Cumberland side. Unable to put together a consistent side for a number of weeks once again Essex made changes. However after a poor performance in their previous match, this was a far better showing from Essex. In the centre court Essex competed well with Jasmine Odeogberin, Isabella Morgan-Smith and Rebecca Wilks fighting to gain control.
However in the circle at both ends Cumberland were very very strong and Essex struggled to match them. In the shooting circle Saffron Hancock and Flo Edwards were finding it tough against a strong Cumberland deference. At the other end despite excellent performances from Michelle Stewart and Honor de Winton the Cumberland shooters rarely miss d taking advantage of all the opportunities that came their way.
Essex trailed early on 5-2 and 8-5. There then followed a crucial spell where Cumberland scored 8 goals in response to a double from Essex and were able to take a commanding 15-7 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter Essex brought on Jaida Simpson into the shooting circle. However the quarter was all one way traffic as far as the scoring was concerned. Initially Essex matched Cumberland goal for goal as both sides started the quarter scoring four goals each. For the rest of the quarter it was all Cumberland as they reeled off 14 goals in response to a couple from Essex. 33-13 down at half time it was all over for Essex.
In the second half Essex introduced Rose Morgan- Smith and Rochelle Reynolds-Blanche in an attempt to change their fortunes. Essex fought back and with Cumberland making changes the game was far more evenly contested. In fact Essex had slightly the upper hand. With Edwards finding the net more frequently Essex had the upper hand. Indeed Essex were able to make a slight inroad into the deficit winning the quarter 13-11.
Unfortunately in the last quarter although Essex continued to battle hard they were unable to reduce the deficit further and with Cumberland continuing to shoot well they went further ahead. When the final whistle went Cumberland ran out 55-35 winners. Essex are now in a struggle to maintain their division 2 status and face a long trip to Hartlepool in two weeks time.
