Fairlands Netball Club was established in 1967. The club is based in the Sutton and Cheam area of Surrey. The name “Fairlands” came from the local telephone exchange, back in the day when you used to say the exchange followed by the number when you answered the phone! The club was founded as a breakaway from another local club by a number of teachers from Nonsuch School and the club originally had the home ground of Nonsuch Girls School. Over the years the club’s home ground has moved around to various venues in the area. These include the London Fire Brigade ground at Priest Hill, the Harris Academy’s at Purley and the one in Sutton, and the Kingston University ground at Tolworth. Now the club is back playing it home games at the original home ground of Nonsuch. In 2009 Fairlands gained the England Netball Bronze CAPS (Club Action Planning Scheme) award, and in 2017 went on to achieve the silver CAPS awards, which is a prestigious accreditation awarded by England Netball to netball clubs that demonstrate high standards in areas like safeguarding, coaching, and club management. It signifies that a club is well-run, inclusive, and committed to providing a safe and positive environment for all members, especially young players. Fairlands were the first club in the region to gain this award. Training for Fairlands has always been on a Wednesday and we are indoor trainers – rather than outdoors! Originally we had all the juniors and seniors at one location – Greenshaw school, bt as the club grew, we decided to have juniors and seniors at different locations but still on a Wednesday evening (and still indoors!) to allow for more players to train. Currently the juniors are at Overton School and Seniors are at Oaks Park School. The club has always been a family club, and over the years have had many family relations including sisters, mum’s and daughters, aunties and nieces, and even three generations of grandmas and granddaughter as members. The club has a thriving junior section junior, catering from ages u10 to u18. The junior section has been so successful that many of our previous junior members have stayed on at the club, or returned from university and have become first team players and committee members themselves.
