Summer was very much hanging on for the first senior match day of the 2023/24 season, with games for the A–D teams on the hottest day of the year so far.

The A team had a tough first match against a well-drilled and speedy Rosslyn Park, but played a calm and steady (and sweaty!) 60 minutes and fought to keep the score within half right to the dying seconds – just missing out with a final score of 32–65.

There was some excellent play from the defence who had lots of tips and interceptions, and a strong effort from the shooters against a pair of springy opposition defenders. With lots of returning players, some in new positions (shout out to Bea for taking on the GA bib this season), and some new faces, there was plenty to be pleased with from the As first game.

The Bs had a strong first half in their game against Whitton and were up by one goal at half-time. The attack end worked hard, with a special mention to Molly who took the majority of the centre passes at WA, and the team showed great support for each other as a new-look shooting end started to build a partnership in the circle. Down the other end of the court, there were some brilliant moments of defence, particularly from Abbie who was relentless in her efforts to turnover ball.

Unfortunately, Whitton pulled away in the second half as limited options to rotate our centre court left everyone very tired. Final score 38–49, but lots of positives to take away and build on throughout the season.

The C team took home a brilliant first win of the season against Focus B with a score of 30–24. There was great support shown throughout the court, offering multiple options to the ball and putting into practise the possession play we've been working on in training (thank you, Tracey!).

Some really positive play with lots of new playing combinations, including a league netball debut from Melissa who was amazing through court and had lots of turnover ball alongside defensive partner, Daisy, in the circle. After an early lead, a rocky third quarter drew the score level, but a last quarter push and whole-team effort secured the win.

Finally, the D team had a great first outing for a brand new team, most of whom don't yet know each other, playing Fetcham Cs. There were some fantastic tips and interceptions from the defence as well as some lovely passages of play through court – something to build on and become more consistent with in the coming weeks.

The attacking end worked hard with some good shooting when opportunities were had, and started to get to grips with the attacking back line with more than half resulting in a goal. It was pleasing to see such great team work and support for each other and good versatility shown by everyone.

A big thank-you to the parents who braved the heat to watch the D team – it's always fantastic to have your support on the sidelines!

OPOM – Alicia

Overall, some really great play from all four teams this weekend and plenty of positives to take forward into the first half of the season – as well as lots to work on, of course. Back to training tomorrow!
