TOWN CHAMPS CONQUER ASHFORD

TOWN CHAMPS CONQUER ASHFORD

Brian Flynn24 May 2016 - 14:16

Faversham Town Under 12s won Ashford United's tournament after sweeping aside the hosts in the final.

They thoroughly deserved to win the tournament.
- U12s head coach Brian Flynn
Town remained unbeaten throughout the competition, conceding just one goal along the way thanks in part to a defending masterclass by George Cutting.
The Lilywhites began their quest in the 7-a-side tournament with a 1-0 win over Park Farm Rangers in their first 10 minute match.
They then ground out a 0-0 draw against Ashford Utd before following it up with another draw, this time 1-1 - versus Ashford Under 11s.
The Under 11s were playing up to make up the numbers after a team dropped out - but ironically were the only side to penetrate George Colyer's goal all day.
The plucky youngsters went 1-0 up before a panicking Town managed to get an equaliser when it seemed time may run out.
But our boys couldn't get the winner, meaning they had to beat Hernehill Herons in the final match to qualify for the semis.
In the best display of the day, the Lilywhites were ahead within 30 seconds before running out 3-0 winners to go through as runners-up.
The boys faced Ashford Utd Juniors - winners of the other section - in the semi-final.
But despite finishing top, Juniors were no match for Town.
Samuel Martin capped a fine day up front by lashing in the second goal in a straightforward 2-0 win with his left foot.
Injuries to Adam Rickard and Benedict Bioletti meant Town were down to the bare bones for the final.
But it was one way traffic as George Colyer had little to do in goal with most of the attacking play up the Ashford Utd end.
There was only one team in it as the hosts fought to keep Town at bay.
But seven minutes in, George McIlroy wove through a sea of defenders and his shot rebounded to Noah Pedder.
With the goal gaping undefended, Pedder drilled the ball home and Town saw out the match without a scare to lift the silverware.
Coach Brian Flynn said: "I'm chuffed for the boys because they thoroughly deserved to win the tournament.
"Sometimes tournaments can be a bit of a lottery because of the short matches, but they played the best football on the day and went through unbeaten from start to finish.
"There were some terrific displays, none better than George Cutting in defence who looked cultured and calm."
