..in a tightly fought battle with Romsey

Fawley RFC U15s put up a valiant fight against Romsey RFC today at home. In the unseasonally warm weather, an enthusiastic Fawley got going straight out of the starting blocks against a strong Romsey side. Within a few minutes, Ethan Morton was denied an opening try as the ball slipped out of his hands at the last minute. Undeterred, Fawley went back at it, but Romsey were ready and the next 20 minutes was a tensely fought contest of strength as the ball went from side to side. Fawley were rewarded for their patience with a fantastic 1st try of the season for Aidan Cross, sailing down the wing to victory. A missed conversion saw the score 5-0 Fawley. Romsey secured a try a few minutes later and a successful conversion meant the scales were tipped 7-5 in favour of the visitors.
An unlucky Wyatt Davies came out of a collision with a quick medical check over and unfortunately was denied play for the rest of the match due to suspected concussion. This was a blow to the home side who were unable to equalise as they approached half time.

After a quick pep talk from their coaches, Fawley came out stronger but were unable to hold off another Romsey try. After a missed conversion Fawley did not lose time and Max Belson was able to break through their defences and score a try and a successful conversion making it 12-12 with only 10 minutes left to play. As one enthusiastic supporter noted, "The Game Starts Now!" and Fawley demonstrated some good passing down the line but were unable to head off an unfortunate 3 further balls over the score line in quick succession. With 2 conversions out of the 3 attempts the score was 31-12 at the final whistle. Fawley were delighted with the performance of newcomer George Hill and returning player Ollie Greenwood, both of whom made a strong impression.

Naturally the home side were disappointed at their opening game. However they are looking forward to their next challenge against Eastleigh in a few weeks and as usual, rugby was the real winner....

Many thanks to our fine organising committee of team manager, chefs, first aider and coaches for an enjoyable if not ultimately successful day of rugby.
