The mighty storks travelled to Tanners lane to take on second placed Standard CC on Saturday. The team consisted of a blend of young and slightly less young trying to build on the impressive performance the week before against Old Eds. Skipper Reg, fresh from twelve pints the day before at Edgbaston, clutching a bottle of water looked to the skies to see grey cloud all around and duly won the toss and elected to bowl first. Joe “I’m in trouble” Simms made his first XI debut.
The start can only be described as excellent, tight bowling from both ends by Will “Pidge” Horton and Junior kept the pressure on with both batsmen regularly playing and missing. At one point Will’s figures made Junior look rather expensive. With no luck the ball was passed to Harry “Hatcha” Tregonning to try and get a breakthrough and at the other end Brendan “Can the ball follow me anymore” Morgan bowling of a couple of paces due to sore Achilles tendons.
Both bowled reasonably well with “Hop along” Morgan taking two wickets and Hatcha one which was smartly caught by Aaron “Hasselhoff” Blackmore (ref: running in slow motion) in the slips. Binga replaced Morgan and bowled well until he had a reoccurrence of his bicep problems and had to be removed from the attack. By this time Junior was looking in the mood to spark a collapse in the Standard batting order, he removed Kidd clean bowled and followed it up by persuading Proctor to vote Leave for the second time this week. This brought the Standard keeper Burke to join Vaughan at the crease who both received lives from juggling Binga and Morgan. Junior returned to remove Burke in his final over and with Vaughan on the brink of a century the rain came down. The apologetic Standard Captain having no choice but to declare the innings with Vaughan on 97, Fillongley chasing 246.
Tea was taken, during a heavy rain shower that required a considerable amount of mopping up afterwards, the Fillongley innings reduced to 44 overs.
The opening pair of Franks and Reg strode out and it wasn’t long before both were striding back, Franks deciding to try and smash the cover off the first legitimate ball of the innings and succeeded to edge to the keeper and Reg cutting a wide long hop straight to point. A rebuilding exercise required and duly performed by Sam “bowl hugger” Skelding and Sajja. The both innings were a little on the edge with Sajja going “six or sticks” first ball and getting away with it and Skeldo trying to guide anything wider than off stump through the well packed slip cordon on a regular basis and failing everytime.
Skelding was eventually removed by Vaughan for 16 but he had done his job using up 56 balls in the process and making the draw the most likely result. The promoted Binga and Hatcha batted responsibly to get the visitors within reach of the draw to fall in sight of the line which left Blackmore and Joe “They aren’t getting me out today” Simms to bring home the draw for the mighty storks! On the whole a day where things could have gone better but some massive positives……the story moves on to Kenilworth next week.
