HEALTH – COMMUNITY – SOLVENCY

We wish everyone who reads this – all our members and valued neighbours – the very best in these challenging, difficult times. We are looking out for each other. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything we can do to help, our contact details are at the bottom of this message.

Over and above all you are seeing on social media, this is our second general message about the club’s response to the Covid-19 crisis. In all we are doing, we are guided by the watchwords of health, community and solvency. And we are doing all we possibly can to be ready for cricket and social activity just as soon as this crisis works its way through. We will keep you informed of all we learn on this front from the government, the ECB and Middlesex CCC.

In the meantime, we want to call out here some of many heroes and heroines in our community, and some associated developments.

First, a big ‘hats off’ to our wonderful new groundsman, Steve Martin, who in splendid isolation on various bits of machinery is doing a stellar job taking the ground from near swamp conditions in early March after all the winter rain to what increasingly looks like a beautiful cricket ground (pictures on the attached document). Many thanks Steve!

And thanks too to some of our delightful local neighbours who have kindly been registering their appreciation of the ground – ‘It is looking really lovely’, ‘It is great to walk and run around the ground. It really helps us feel better in these challenging times!’ We are looking forward to hosting an excellent post lockdown party when we can!

Secondly, we are taking steps to stay virtually connected as a club community. There was an excellent quiz on Sunday 28 March. And our very own Simon Stevens, long-time coach at the club, recently launched the #FinchleyFab4 cricket challenge across the ether. You will find the link here - https://tinyurl.com/s2j3f7k. Go on, get stuck in and enter the prize draw too. The modest proceeds will be shared by Simon, Dementia Club UK (whom we host at the club every first Monday of the month but whose activities have now been suspended for at least a month now, causing real difficulties in this already isolated community) and the club. Much more to come on the virtual front and all ideas and offers of help much appreciated!

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, we offer here a massive shout out for some of our members and their relatives who are doing amazing things every day on the front line in tackling this crisis. Look out for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and the club website at 2000 on Thursday 9 April for this shout out at the same time as the regular national ‘Clap for Carers’ moment. So many thanks and much admiration this time around to Sarah Evans (doctor at King’s College Hospital), Oscar Emanuel (doctor in acute medicine), Neal Patel (A&E doctor in Stoke Mandeville hospital), Matt Walshe (procurement at the Royal Free hospital) and all the others we will hear about in the coming days.

And one of our members’ aeroplanes on its round trip to China, bringing back tons of cargo, essential medical supplies going straight to the NHS, with no layover for the crew on immediate turnaround (pictures on the attached document). Hiru Bathija, a Finchley CC colt a few years ago who has recently re-joined the club, is not only a great man- he is a Virgin pilot and captain!

And, finally, in the absence of cricket related and social event income, we are working steadfastly and determinedly to manage and assure our financial health and solvency through the coming weeks so that we emerge securely on the other side of this crisis. We shall let you know more about this work in our next message in about ten days’ time – accompanying a request to anyone who could and would like to make a gift aided donation. Without any sense of obligation in these difficult times, we would be very grateful indeed for any contributions on this front. More in our next message.

In the meantime, all thanks to all who are working so hard in the club’s interests and please take good care. With very best wishes,
