Five Ways hit the road for the first time this season in the league away at Rugeley. Both teams have had a good start to the season so it was always going to be a close encounter.
The weather made this fixture a tricky affair, with a strong downpour from beginning to end.
FW started strong and ran some strong lines, testing the defence of the home team. Rugeley also saw some good ball in the early stages and made some good ground but couldn't break the Five Ways defence. Some good tactical kicking from John Mounter turned Rugeley around and made good territory for Ways. Strong carries from the FW forwards lead to a gap being capitalised on by the ever snipping Tom Griffiths who broke the line and drove over the line for the 1st score, the extras were added by John Mounter.
Half time 0-7
The second half started with Rugeley applying strong pressure to get back into the game, they used their strong runners well and drove FW back. One of Ways strong points so far this season has been their defence and that held up again as Rugeley failed to break through and Ways got the ball back.
The home team continued to see good ball and worked through the phases and this time they found their big number 8 who charged through the line and scored Rugeleys 1st points of the game. Unfortunately for the home team, the extra weren't added.
Five Ways knew they had to stay strong and score again. An early penalty opportunity wasn't capitalised on by Ways but they knew they were in control. Ways upped the tempo and played good rugby to push Rugeley back into their half. A break in the line led to Neil Davies turning inside and powering over the line under the posts. John Mounter again added the extras.
Ways held the attacks from Rugeley to see the game out and finish with a strong performance that leaves them 3 wins from 3 in the league.
Big performances from the whole team but James Mounter was picked out as MOTM for his strong running and even stronger defence.
Next week sees Five Ways welcome St Leonard's to the Masshouse in the league.
