Five Ways inability to switch on and take control of the game costs them.

After a vital victory the previous week against Coventrians, Five Ways were looking to cement a good league position with a win against Coventry Welsh.

Unfortunately, as has been a recurring problem in previous weeks, Five Ways failed to switch on from the start and allowed a break away try from Coventry Welsh’s 22, leaving them 7-0 down with only minutes gone. Five ways were plagued with poor handling and ball retention which led to Coventry scoring a second try with a push over maul. FWOE continued to put pressure on themselves with an all-round lack of conviction in the first half which lead to Coventry scoring a third time with a well-executed backs move. Five ways did however show some good attacking ability with some good runs from Scott Adkins. Finally with a good call and pass from Chris Short, James Mounter finished off a well worked try leaving the half time score at 19-5.

With a stern talking to at half time, Five Ways knew they needed to improve their game. Despite this it took an early try by Coventry Welsh for Five Ways to begin to play. Five Ways showed better defensive play after this point and did not concede again for the remainder of the half. Five Ways pressured the Coventry Welsh defence but, again, dropped balls stopped Five Ways from getting some continuous forward momentum. Coventry Welsh had a played sent off with 16 minutes to go and FWOE capitalised with 12 minutes to go with a well worked backs move and Tom Griffiths finishing it off. Five ways continued to push but just couldn’t find that killer pass to get those all-important tries. Final score 24-10 to Coventry Welsh.

Five Ways showed some fighting spirit in the second half but need to put in a complete performance for the full 80 minutes. Some positives to be taken from the game but much to work on for the next game so let’s see a good turnout on Tuesday.
