Five ways take a beating against a high flying Evesham team who were well drilled and full of confidence.

This is more of a match summary than report as there’s not much to report on from Five Ways point of view. Even with the loss of captain and fly half John Mounter and the disruption of losing the ref, the outcome was never in doubt.

Evesham had a simple game plan of kicking long when they were in their own half and when they got good ball they supported in numbers and trusted their hands in the offload. Five Ways, although didn’t miss many first up tackles, couldn’t live with the pace of the support runners coming onto the ball. Hence they took control of the game right from the start and never let up.

As the score suggests there was much to learn from this game and a long way to improve before Five Ways become a team that can compete in every game. This said there were some thing that went well. First up tackles as previously mentioned were made all be it against a much bigger team, the breakdown battle was well contested and would it would be fair to say we didn’t lose any of our own ball.

There were 3 moments worth mentioning that the supports and players enjoyed however. The first was the try. A great team try which saw George Leech draw two players before getting a pass to Sam Statham who crossed in the corner. The next was a silky little behind the back pass from Scott Pickervance, rolling back the years, which lead to a bit of space for the backs to run into. Even the opposition supporters cheered that one. The final mention was a monstrous tackle from the Five Ways juggernaught winger, James Mounter, which shook the very foundations of the Masshouse.
