Al fell into playing rugby when racing yachts around the Solent proved too expensive. Having previously played for Old Bosworthians RFC and University of Leicester RFC, Al joined Five Ways OE RFC at the age of 16.
His favourite rugby moments include the tour to Cornwall in 1997, the tour to Western and the tour of Great Yarmouth. Volunteering at Five Ways has opened up lots of opportunities for Al from acting as Hon. Secretary for the whole club, gaining experience working behind the bar and getting into coaching.
From setting up the Women’s section with several other key players a coaching ethos was developed within the club which has seen the continued sustainability of the women’s team and the success of two youth teams. Al's coaching highlights include coaching Greater Birmingham Under 16 Boys, North Midlands Under 18 girls and seeing the players he has coached achieve their goals on and off the field. In terms of youth development Al has helped produce 25 Greater Birmingham players, 13 North Midlands players, 2 England U16 players and 1 Ireland U18 player in the last 12 years.
When asked about his favourite time period at the club, he replied "Now! We have keen enthusiastic volunteers who want to drive the club forwards and the club is going places. If you want to see how much you can gain by giving up just a bit of your spare time drop me an email at atbrodgers@icloud.com".
