First v FC Deportivo Galicia

Fleet Spurs 3 FC Deportivo Galicia 4 (Combined Counties League Division 1)

John Porter Reports:

Despite the recent heavy rain, the Kennels Lane pitch again held up well, which is more than can be said about either defence in what was an exciting but somewhat chaotic game.

Depor got off to an excellent start, when in the sixth minute Victor Mudonhi unluckily but powerfully deflected a right-wing cross past the startled Mark Appleby and high into the net.

Deportivo continued to play the more constructive football with good inter-passing but fortunately for Spurs showed little cutting edge and scarcely troubled Appleby.

As half-time approached, Fleet began to get into the game, and three minutes before the interval, the Depor defence allowed a James Thomas free-kick to reach Karl Dallaway at the far post, and the striker scored comfortably from close range.

Spurs took the initiative after the break, but within five minutes a defensive howler on the edge of their box gave striker Anton Fernandez a clear sight of goal and he drove the ball low and hard into the corner of the net to restore Deportivo’s lead.

The game continued with both sides having scoring opportunities and in the 74th minute central defender Matthew Sermon rose above the Spurs defence to double Depor’s lead.

Three minutes later, it was the visitors’ turn to show slackness in defence. They failed to clear their lines after a Fleet attack and sub Jamil Olweny shot high past visiting keeper Kavi Luchowa to reduce the arrears.

Three minutes from the end of normal time, Fernandez put the result beyond doubt when he hammered the ball high past Appleby’s right hand for the best goal of the match, though even then, Spurs were guilty of giving him too much room.

One minute into stoppage time, Depor returned Spurs’ hospitality by conceding the second own goal of the match, the ball trickling almost apologetically into the corner of the net.

Overall, the result just about reflected the balance of play, with the home defence being even more generous than the visitors’.

Although Spurs’ late goal did not affect the result of the game, it did surprisingly change their league position. Without it, they would have been bottom of the league with the worst goal difference of the three teams on 15 points, Cove, Kensington Borough and Spurs themselves. However the goal meant that Fleet and Borough now have the same goal difference and Spurs have scored 13 more goals and are therefore above their rivals.

Spurs have no game next Saturday, and their next game is on Tuesday 19 February when they entertain Chessington & Hook at Kennels Lane (kick-off 7.45).

Spurs team: Mark Appleby, Chris Barnes (capt), Lee Bush (sub Harry Warner 89), Victor Mudonhi, George Morris, Pat Sawkins, Rich Swain, James Thomas (sub Matt Hayler h-t), Karl Dallaway, Sam Knowles, Sam Middleton (sub Jamil Olweny 67)
