Away day blues for Fleetwood
By David Woodcock
Rochdale 77 v Fleetwood 0
Report by Steve Doherty
A side weakened by injury suspension and late cry offs took the field against a very useful and determined Rochdale side. The first 15 minutes were even, with Fleet having a slight edge in possession and territory. Rochdale then stepped up a couple of gears. With forwards running hard and backs with pace they cut the Fleet defence to ribbons. From 0-0 at 15 minutes the score rocketed to 41-0 at half time. Coach Steve Woodburn who played 80 minutes himself rallied the troops at half time and for the first 24 minutes of the second half there was no further score. We were helped by a yellow card shown to a Rochdale player but the guys stuck to their task. However the final minutes proved to be a nightmare as Rochdale ran riot running in a further 6 tries to finish worthy winners.
A young (19) referee from Hong Kong officiated very well, getting some experience while at university in England.
Thanks to the Rochdale committee and club, especially Mike Henry (fingers) for their excellent hospitality.
Next week our visitors are Leigh.
