Bonus point win for Fleetwood v Wigan

Heavy overnight rain meant that this game might have been moved to the well drained pitches of King George’s Playing Fields. However the rain stopped and the work of our ground staff paid dividends as the pitch was just playable by 3pm kick off.
The wet conditions proved difficult for both teams with continuity a problem. Both defences were on top and after an altercation involving a number of players the referee sent one from each side to cool off for 10 minutes. This focused both teams on playing rugby. On 13 minutes a great break by Joe Sharratt saw him under the posts for a try converted by Tom Evans to give Fleet a 7-0 lead. Wigan responded and from a line out five metres out created space for their centre to score. 7-5. The rest of the half saw both sides cancel each other out until the 39th minute when Andy (Lomu) Holme broke down his wing to feed the supporting Devon Brown who splashed down for a try. Half Time 12-5.
Wigan were quickly out of the blocks in the second half scoring an unconverted try to reduce the deficit to 2 points. This galvanised Fleetwood into action. A penalty by Tom Evans, was quickly followed by two converted tries by Evans and Doherty to make the lead a comfortable 29-10. Mike Kelly splodged down for a try followed by another for Tom Evans to give Fleetwood a comfortable win 39-10.
The Man of the Match award was a difficult decision. Everyone played their part. However, for his efforts in getting the new kit designed, sponsored and delivered on time, the award goes to Ricky Newton.
This was a spirited performance by Fleetwood against a Wigan side that never gave up.
Next week we all have a day off playing to support England in their quest for the Webb Ellis Trophy. The club will open at 8am. The Final kicks off at 9am and the bar opens at 10am. Breakfasts and bacon butties will be served. Everyone welcome.
