Honours even

A team of mascots from Fleetwood’s under 9’s accompanied the team onto the pitch. Unavailability of a number of key players meant a much changed side from last week but hopes were still high of continuing their rich vein of form. Ormskirk were also riding high in the league just one place behind Fleetwood in 3rd spot.

Fleetwood took an early lead on 15 minutes when from a scrum 20 metres out, a well worked move put Loz in under the posts. Ricky Newton added the extras for a 7-0 lead. Ormskirk hit back with a well worked try of their own from a 5 metre line out. The conversion levelled the scores at 7-7. The rest of the half was a rather dull affair but Ormskirk gaining the upper hand with 2 well struck penalties to lead 7-13 at the break.

The second half saw Fleetwood attack with more purpose. After a succession of penalties Ricky Newton reduced the deficit with a penalty 10-13. 2 tries in quick succession gave Fleetwood a well deserved lead, but unfortunately the conversions were missed. The lead was now 20-13. Ormskirk were playing with renewed confidence and with time running out a deft chip and a kind bounce gave their wing the opportunity to score a try, that when converted level the match at 20-20. The last couple of minutes saw Fleetwood pinned back on their line but the defence held out as they held on for a draw.

The man of the match award was made by our Match Sponsors Marston’s Brewery. A number of people were mentioned including Ricky Newton who showed great versatility in starting at centre and ending the game at prop. Chris Jones had an excellent game, running the ball well out of defence but the clear winner was Loz for his hat trick of tries. His case of beer was enjoyed by all the team.
