Flint made hard work of this victory against a plucky Penycae side, determined to regain some respect following their 10-0 mauling at the hands of Caersws the previous week.
Flint had the better of the opening exchanges, and spurned two good chances in the opening 15 mins. First, Sam Jones put a free kick just
wide from 18 yards out, and then Shaun Beck was denied by keeper Mike Platt who turned his effort round the post.
Then on 20 minutes, Penycae offered their first real threat when John Davies lost possession to Jimmy Jones, but his tame effort was safely collected by Mike Jones in the Flint goal.
Flint opened the scoring on 22 minutes, when Phil Lloyd rampaged down the left wing and his quality cross was bundled across the line by Aaron Edwards from 4 yards out.
The Silkmen doubled their advantage 2 minutes later, when Sam Jones outmuscled two Penycae defenders in the box, to fire home.
However, that only served to strengthen the home side's resolve, and from the restart they went down the other end and immediately grabbed a goal back, courtesy of Ian Oliver Davies, who broke through the middle of the Flint defence and cooly planted a shot into the net.
On 28 minutes, the home side pulled level, when Flint keeper Jones fumbled the ball, and allowed Oliver Davies to round him and walk the ball into an empty net.
Flint regained the lead on 35 mins, when Beck broke into the box only to be upended by Platt as he mistimed his lunge for the ball. Aaron Edwards stepped up tp the spot, but although his initial effort was beaten out by Platt, he kept his composure to score the rebound.
Platt sustained an injury in his efforts to keep out the penalty and was replaced by reserve keeper Ashley Roberts just before half time.
For much of the 2nd half, Roberts was barely troubled, as Flint struggled to create any chances of note.
Penycae wasted a great chance to level the scores after 57 mins when Andrews dragged his shot wide from 6 yards out, after McConnell had squared the ball to him.
Flint finally got their act together on 80 minutes, when Phil Lloyd's spectacular bicycle kick was well saved by Roberts. But barely a minute later, a defence splitting pass from substitute Stewart Carroll released Edwards, who calmly placed his shot wide of Roberts and into the net, to complete his hat-trick.
But Penycae still weren't finished and an 86th minute free kick from Nick Jones reduced the deficit once more, ensuring a tense final few minutes for the visitors, who hung on to claim the 3 points.
