A much needed win today at home to Rhayader hopefully will see us put some light between us and the teams below us. Although not the prettiest of games the win was a must and Flint started well enough and had the first effort of the game on 20 minutes when Jamie Price hits over from range. Rhayader's Dylan McPhee should have done better moments later as he had space 120 yards out but could only offer a tame shot at Ben Jones. Flint Take the lead on 26 minutes when a great low defence splitting ball From Stewart Carroll is met by Jamie Price who lays in low and Marc Gunther scores on the second attempt after the Rhayader keeper made a good save in a crowded box. Marc Gunther was denied his second goal after the Rhayader Keeper Luke Evans pulled off a breath taking save following his headed effort from a Jordan Beck cross. Gunther didn’t have to wait long to be back on the score sheet as four minutes later he has a simple tap in after Jamie Price passed two defenders to roll the ball across the face of the goal. Lee Davey was unlucky just before half time as his volley following a poor clearance is brilliantly saved by the Rhayader keeper.
So we enter the usually dreaded second half and Rhayader did improve and had Flint on the back foot for large periods of the half. Flint did miss a great chance on 52 minutes as Marc Gunther scuffed a shot from close range. Flint were then put under pressure at the back, Mike Collister unlucky with a header on 56 minutes as the ball hits the feet of Ben Jones in the Flint goal. Rhayader’s pressure paid off minutes later as from a corner Christian Jones is unmarked and has a simple tap in. the move of the game was seen on 68 minutes from Flint as great link up play from Marc Gunther and Lee Davey results in Rhayader keeper Luke Evans pulling off another great save to denie Davey. Flint soaked up the pressure and assured the points deep into stoppage time as Lee Davey managed to get in a low cross from a difficult position and substitute Gareth Roberts hits home into an empty net.
Although not pretty football the aim today was a must win to stop the free fall of late and we delivered that. So now we are halfway through the season we will now look for a good run of results witch hopefully see us in a top 6 finish at the end of the season.
