I am sad to say the Ken Hedges the 1st groundman for Footscray RUFC at 239a Footscray Road has passed away. Here are the thoughts of his son Mike Hedges ex-1st player 1991-2012.
I have to let you all know that my dad, Ken Hedges, passed away today. He was surrounded by his daughters and me for the past few days.
"We spent a difficult time together in the knowledge that our dad was a wonderful father, loving husband and a very happy and contented with his life.
He has told me on numerous occasions that the time he spent with Footscray RUFC and New Eltham CC was the happiest time of his life. Both as groundsman, batsman, fielder and mostly as bowler of the deadliest off spin anywhere in the western world.
It’s safe to say that he loved every minute at the club, especially preparing the rugby pitches and cricket squares. He is a football lover as well. Big time. But all who know our dad will say that he is a people person. And it is the people that he worked for, to make them happy with the pitches, played cricket with or whether they just played with him or drank beer with him.
It’s a measure of Footscray RUFC that not only did all the club take my dad to their heart, he took them and the club to his heart."
