Spirited chase comes up 12 runs short

Formby were given an immediate chance to redress the balance with Bootle in their ECB Vitality Club t20 match on Sunday morning at Wadham Road. With Ketteringham having demonstrated yet again his poor tossing credentials, Bootle chose to bat first, and set off at a good rate, Hale and Tripathi both striking the ball hard, but at 21, Hale tried to pull Aitchison, but didn’t get hold of it and Taibu made ground from mid-wicket towards mid-on to take the chance easily.
It was to be some time before another wicket fell, as Tripathi and Davies added 139 for the second wicket, in quick time, with Tripathi doing the bulk of the scoring until he ran down the wicket to Atkinson and missed as the bowler didn’t. His 90 had come from 62 balls, with 11 fours and 2 sixes, 84 in the partnership.
Formby breathed a collective sigh of relief when Davies followed him back to the pavilion with only a single added, caught by Ketteringham off Aitchison for 62 off 35 balls, with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Aitchison remained in the frame for the 2 wickets which fell in what remained of the innings, his powerful throw from the deep beating Purser’s attempt to steal a second run, then returning the favour by catching Butterworth off Ketteringham’s bowling, a particularly good effort, this, having to run in some distance before diving forward full length to just get his fingers under the ball. Bootle totalled 180-5 from their 20 overs, a score that would take some getting!
Aitchison’s 2 wickets cost 22 each, whilst Jones was the most economical, with only 25 runs from his 4 overs. Ollie Sutton’s leg didn’t hold up as he bowled only one ball before having to pass the ball to his captain to complete the over.
Opening the batting with Taibu, he crowned a truly forgettable weekend by hitting his second ball straight up in the air, to be caught by Cavies off Purser without troubling the scorers. Taibu played some classy shot and some powerful ones, taking the score up to 61 with Oldham, before departing in unluck style, advancing to Liaqat and getting a bottom edge onto his own heel, which ricocheted back onto his stumps with unerring accuracy. His 41 runs were made from 27 balls, with 6 fours.
Atkinson and Oldham took up the chase but the former only made 4 before perishing to a Hale catch in the deep off Tripathi’s spin. Seward replaced him at 70-3 but lost Oldham 13 runs later, stumped off Tripathi for 30 (23 balls, 4 fours). Aitchison and Seward got the score into 3 figures, the former making 21 from 11 balls (2 fours and a six) before falling to a catch by Butterworth, trying to hit another six off Davies.
111705 became 129-6 as Seward fell to a catch by Hale at deep midwicket off Davies for 24 at a run a ball, with just a single four. This brought Vahaluwala to the crease, and he survived a chance on 1 off an attempt at a reverse scoop shot, before losing his captain after an eight-ball innings that consisted of 7 dots, a huge straight six and an unsuccessful sally down the pitch to Tripathi be stumped at 140-7.
Formby had been just about keeping the required rate around the 10 and over mark, but were running out of fuel. Hopes were revived when Vahaluwala took 22 off Butterworth’s fourth over, the 17th of the innings.
With 17 required to win off the final over, Formby had a glimmer of a chance, but they needed Vahaluwala on strike (and he wasn’t!). A leg-bye got him there first basll, but he failed to reach the boundary and when Anthony Poole turned for a second and was sent back and stranded, the run-out left new batsman Patel on strike with 15 required from 4 balls. Patel did his job with a single but a deperate foray down the pitch saw Vahaluwala strumped next ball for 32 (16 balls, 5 fours and a six), so that Jones had no chance barring a no-ball or wide. He got a single before Patel’s final sally bought another stumping and Formby lost by just 12 runs.
Tripathi’s 5-13 from 4 overs were mostly presented to him by a side with little option but to find some boundaries. Davies’s 2-48 from his 4 overs was next best for Bootle.
