Foxhole Vets produced an excellent performance which ultimately secured the Division 1 league title in the Cornwall Veterans League.
The Foxes went into the game knowing 3 points would secure the title, but any slip up could open the door for opponents Perranporth and near challengers Millbrook, with Downderry Rovers and Lanreath also in the mix.
With Goverseth Park still unavailable, once again Par Running Track was the home team’s venue. Unlike in recent weeks where the surface was bone hard, dry and bobbly, heavy overnight and morning rain meant the pitch was a lot softer with a slicker surface.
The home side got off to a flying start, finding themselves 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes. Steve Wheatley opened the scoring, stealing in at the back post to steer home Dan O’Shaughnessy’s cross and Kev Grainger doubled the lead finishing off another fine move.
With no further first half goals, the Foxes went into the break two goals to the good, but with the second period barely a minute old, Perranporth were right back in the game when influential midfielder, Paul Robertson found the top corner with a speculative strike from all of 35 yards.
The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession, but failed to penetrate the Foxes backline. The hosts were able to create further chances with Mark Carter going closest with a headed effort.
With the game becoming more stretched and the Perranporth defence tiring, Nick Isbell ran free, but as he was about to get his shot away the challenge from behind was deemed illegal, inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Wheatley bagged his second of the match confidently stroking home the spot kick.
Further late goals with Grainger also netting his second of the match and Isbell finding the target secured a resounding 5-1 success which gave the Foxes an unassailable lead at the top of the table
