Another weekend of kit washing was on the agenda as the poor weather continued and again it was off to Hoopers for today’s game against Kingswood. With Jamie injured and Nik absent Fram were a bit short on the ground. Kingswood brought a strong contingent so in true sporting fashion it was great to see the numbers even as we were pleased to borrow a player to make up the numbers to allow for the 13 a side format.
The game started brightly with both sides sounding each other out. A good early run from Rory put Fram inside Kingswood territory however following a kick out Kingswood stole the ball 5 metres out and were able to cross over for the opening score, the try converted for a 7-0 lead. More Kingswood pressure followed but a good kick out by Lewis and a brave chase down and tackle by Jack again put Fram in a good position. However a breakaway near the end of the quarter resulted in a further score for Kingswood to increase their lead to 14-0 at the end of first period.
Fram were always a threat in this competitive contest and there was little to choose between the teams. Matt was hooking well and the pack supplied good support too with some strong pushing. However the visitors extended their lead when the ball was worked wide for a try in the corner. Their lead was nearly further extended but for a great try saving tackle by Nick. Another score was not far away however when following a scrum the strong Kingswood pack burst through the middle to end the half 28-0 up.
Some encouragement from the coaching team at half time had an instant effect and Fram had better purpose in the third period. Finn and Marcus were as always in the thick of things and a kick out by Kingswood was well caught by Ben who ran at the Kingswood defence. Soon after Mike broke through to cross the line however play was called back for an incident further up the field. Such a shame as it was no more than Fram deserved for all their hard work. After a talking too by the referee and handshakes all round play continued. No score in the third period which was unfortunate for all of Fram’s pressure.
The final period was upon us and Fram’s hard work was finally rewarded. From the kick off the ball was collected by Lewis who had a fantastic game at scrum half and his great run along the line resulted in a well deserved try despite several attempted tackles. Jack converted to pull the score back to 28-7. Fram continued to push forward and Gabe was always on hand to power on but the Kingswood defence held firm. Then late on a burst through by Kingswood led to another try despite some strong tackling by Olley and Charlie for a final score of 35-7 to the visitors.
A rather flattering scoreline which did not support all the hard work and commitment shown by the boys today but some promising signs moving forward. Thanks to Steve for refereeing whilst having some tough calls to make and as always to the parents and coaches for their vocal support.
