Liddle was born in Sunderland and was on Sunderland FC's books as a junior before he moved to London and played for Charlton Athletic.
He came to South Elmsall just before the war along with Westie Cuthbert and was employed at Frickley pit on condition that he played for the Colliery side.
Liddle was a lodger with Mr & Mrs Minett on Langthwaite Lane where he met their daughter Doris whom he married in 1942. Doris died in 1992 but is probably best remembered selling Massarella's ice-cream at the top of the market in South Elmsall for many years.
As well as a footballer, Liddle was a great cricketer and is reckoned by many to be the best every to play for Frickley. he was a brilliant leg spin bowler who take 8 wickets for 14 runs against Hickleton and all 10 wickets against Firbeck in the Yorkshire Council.
He was appointed groundsman at Frickley for both cricket and football before the council took over and was the groundsman when Frickley Colliery drew 2-2 with Rotherham United in the FA Cup.
In his later years he was a keen follower and regular attender for both the Frickley football and cricket teams until failing health took him to a nursing home in Pontefract where he sadly passes away.
