Last night saw the first competitive fixture for our Under 21s (who are now playing in an Under 23s league) under the tutelege of Kyle O'Reilly.
There was a generous sprinkling of lads who have been in & around the 1st team squad in recent times - Lewis Bowring, Brad Mears, Ellis hancock, Oli Russon, Kyle Simpson, Jed Wilkinson (playing again after a recent injury) - & the boys looked good early on. Paul Sherburn had his dancing shoes on again & showed lovely footwork to get into the box but his shot was palmed out for a corner.
It was the visitors that took the lead however with a well taken free kick.
But then Strictly Sherburn got the Young Azzurri back on terms with a great break & strike. Then he pirouetted (or was it a Paso heel ball turn) & crashed a shot against the post.
All square at half time
Very much cut & thrust in the 2nd half until the boys had, what Coach Kyle called, their 15 minutes of madness - which saw them go 3-1 down.
Still 3-1 with 15 minutes to go - game over surely? Clearly the lads didn't get the memo - penalty awarded & Greavesy makes it 2-3 from the spot. Then it was Tora Tora Tora - Kyle Simpson curls a shot from pretty much on the bye line, beats the keeper & into the onion bag. 3 a piece - clearly you take the point don't you.
Nope - within seconds Sherbs crashes home & it's 4-3 Azzurri - absolute scenes!
A very entertaining game to watch - well done to both sets of players.
Very much a team display by the Blues - but mentions for Sherbs, Jed, Mearsy, Ellis Hancock & Will Sutton, but the whole squad played its part.
Stand out player for the visitors was their number 9 - looked a very decent player - sorry I don't have his name
