The Azzurri turn up the heat on SPS

Frickley ended their home league campaign, on another very hot day, as they showed their mettle to comfortably defeat the Steels.

A switch of keepers was the only change from Saturday, as Hugo came in for Sam who took his place on the bench. To be honest, the defence did such a good job that Hugo's main task for the afternoon was keeping his sun cream topped up. The boys at the back ironed out any faults to prevent SPS from trying to nick(el) a goal.

Frickley were on the front foot from the off, Haze broke free & his shot was inches wide then Killer Watt put one just past the far stick on the half hour & Youngy headed a Tyler free kick wide. The Blues took the lead on 40 minutes. Tyler fed Haze in the box but as he rounded the keeper it took him wide so he flicked a ball into the box & Karl Byrne was on hand to stick it home to get his first goal for the club. Byrne then set up Tyler but his shot hit the side netting in added time at the end of the first half.

The boys came out with more of the same in the second half as the mercury continued to rise - Tyler created a good chance for himself which was well saved & Youngy headed over from the resulting corner.

Jacob, who was playing his 150th game for the Blues, was still seeking the elusive 2 goals to take him to 100 for the club & he was agonisingly close to number 99 as he burst free of his defender & into the box but his shot hit the post.

The game was over on the hour - Tyler Walton pulling some real magic out of the box & crossing for Greg Young to steel in & smash home from close in. The Blues then neutralised the game - the main taking point being the SPS bench calling out the ref for being a cad(mium) & they were a little fortunate not to get dispatched to the stands.

A good team performance brought home the 3 points in front of a good crowd of 232 (thank you to everyone for your attendance yesterday & throughout the season) - fans certainly got good value for their brass.

Highlights & interview courtesy of Frickley Athletic TV You Tube channel

WEBMASTER MOTM - very solid at the back; Watty, Jammer, Jemmo, Youngy & Ousman were all on point, with Ousman playing most of the 2nd half in attacking positions. Luke Hinsley ran himself into the ground (again), almost matched by Karl B. Tyler was on excellent form & Haze came so close on a number of occasions but I'm giving the Glitterball to Sam Liversidge. He was almost McGuire-esque in centre mid, breaking down opposition forays & getting the ball moving forward

TWITTER POLL MOTM - Charlie Jemson came out on top, narrowly beating Tyler. Sam also polled as did Killer Watt. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote

So, just the one league fixture remains - we are away to AFC Mansfield on Saturday. See you there
