Frimley back at the top after solid display

Match Report by Alex Walker

Dorking Wanderers U23s vs Frimley Green – 26th January 2019

After the dejection of the narrow defeat to Sheerwater and falling to 2nd place in the table last Saturday, Frimley were looking to bounce back when they travelled to Dorking to face Dorking Wanderers U23s.
There were debuts for Lloyd Foot, Dan Thorogood and Danny Turner (although Turner had played the 45 minutes that was managed in the abandoned game at Tooting Bec in the cup). Ben Dearlove came in at full back and James Vass returned from injury to play left back.

The hosts had the first notable effort at goal when Ben Dyson’s shot from distance sailed over the bar in the 2nd minute. Intention from the off for Dorking, but Frimley went straight down the other end to open the scoring in the 3rd minute, Turner cutting back from the by-line to Sean Latimer who took a touch and placed the ball past the Drew Churchwell in the home goal.

A ball was played over the top in the 5th minute for Latimer, who got to it and took a shot after good control from just outside the box but this time Churchwell was equal to it by making the save. Frimley continued to pour forward and in the 10th minute had another shot at goal through Leo Medrado. The forward seeing his shot saved when under a challenge from a defender after Eddie McKinlay had found him with a good cross field pass.

Frimley had two corners’ in quick succession and were unlucky not to extend the lead on the quarter hour mark. First, Thorogood swung his corner deep to the far post and Churchwell got a faint touch to knock the ball out for another corner. This time McKinlay crossed to the far post for Foot to head wide. Early dominance was still on show and McKinlay managed to get down the left and drill across towards Turner who was poised to score, but Churchwell done well to smother the ball in front of the attacker.

A rare attack in the first quarter of the game for the home side ended when Festils Ediku’s shot from distance was saved by Chris Harris in the Frimley goal. Approaching the half hour mark and both sides traded shots, first Calum Nimmo played a lovely diagonal pass to Turner who managed to control the ball and get a shot away that was saved by Churchwell. Dorking went down the other end and saw George Membrillera’s shot from distance saved by Harris.

Membrillera had the next shot of the game, but saw his drive from the edge of the box saved by Harris, who gathered the ball at the second attempt with an attacker closing in. Frimley at this point were doing well to limit the home side to shots from distance. Harris was to make probably the save of the game as Dorking had their first real chance when Luke Cunningham crossed to the far post and Pascal Sedgwick headed towards goal. Harris getting across and tipping the ball over from right in the corner of bar and post.

The game was easing towards half time when Dyson was booked for a foul when sliding in on Cam Miller. Frimley won another free kick further up the field and from 22 yards out, McKinlay went direct for goal but saw his effort saved by Churchwell.

Half Time: Dorking Wanderers U23s 0-1 Frimley Green

Five minutes into the second half and the hosts had a glorious chance to level things. Teddy Ralph got in down the right, crossed the ball over the advancing Harris to Dyson who struck the post with his effort, he managed to get to the loose ball in the box but shot over after the Frimley defence had retreated and covered the goal well. Ten minutes into the second period and Frimley’s dominance was rewarded with their first real effort of the half.

McKinlay drifted a corner over the near post defender and the ball was weighted perfectly for Latimer to run on to and volley the ball into the net to give Frimley the 2-0 lead.

On the hour Frimley had another chance to score after good build up play by Medrado and Latimer found Turner who saw his shot saved by Churchwell, Medrado’s follow up shot hitting the post and going out for a goal kick. A sub for either side came midway through the half, Ralph came off for Elliot Donns for the home side and Dan Bone replaced McKinlay for Frimley.

Frimley’s momentum was not affected by the changes, Bone managing to play Turner through, the forward shooting wide with a defender putting him under pressure and Churchwell closing in too. Frimley extended their lead further when Dorking took a short corner. Medrado won the ball in the corner and broke away, playing the ball down the line for Latimer to run on to. Latimer ran towards the box and played the ball across for Turner who cut inside and with the keeper closing on him and hearing screams from the advancing Miller, squared the ball for the midfielder to shoot past a defender on the line and into the net to make it 3-0. The size of lead was the least Frimley deserved at this point.

Michael Lacey replaced Thorogood after the goal and Frimley were on the front foot right from the restart. Latimer found Medrado running into the box, the forward shot across goal past Churchwell, but a defender got back and managed to clear over the bar. Nimmo headed over from the resulting corner. James Vass managed to complete 75 minutes on his return and was replaced by James Batchelor for Frimley’s final substitution.
For only the second time in the game, Dorking got in behind the Frimley defence when Dyson crossed for Sedgwick who was unmarked in the box. Harris managed to close the striker down before he could get his shot away. Another change for the home side came when Membrillera was replaced by George Coffey.

Both sides had a further effort each in the final 5 minutes. After a ball played across field by Medrado, Bone got in down the left and past a defender before prodding wide. Then as the game approached injury time, Coffey shot wide from the edge of the box when he had teammates better placed in the box.

The game came to an end, Frimley looked threatening throughout and mainly restricted Dorking to long range efforts and were rarely troubled at the back.
