The Frome RFC 2nd XV were on the road on Saturday when they made the trip into Wiltshire to face fierce rivals Devizes RFC 2nd, and having had a tough encounter at home earlier in the season Frome would have to be on point to gain the win.
The home side one the coin toss and chose to play down the slight slope with the wind at their backs for the first half.
Devizes had the majority of possession in the opening 15 minutes and were camped in the Frome 22 using their large pack and long kicks to pin the the visitors back.
Frome’s aggressive defence managed to prevent Devizes from scoring and were able to force a knock on. From the resulting scrum on the 5 meter line, No.8 Ross Toten picked and challenged the game line.
Good hands to Outside Centre James Gallop, saw an offload go to Flanker James Milton who started off a chain of offloads which saw Captain Dean Marshall superbly offload to put Inside Centre Matt Warnock through for the first points of the day in the corner, unfortunately the strong wind meant a difficult kick just going short.
Frome managed to score the second try shortly after following good pressure and a Scrum in the Devizes 22. It was Toten who picked from the base and stepped the opposition Fly Half to score. Again the kick being missed.
The final points of the half saw some excellent Frome Forwards play, and after multiple phases Marshall dove over from close range to score against his former club, the kick coming up just short.
Half Time Score: Devizes RFC 2nd 0 - 15 Frome RFC 2nd
With the wind now at there backs and the slope in their favour Frome knew they could add more points and put the game to bed as long as they continued to complete.
After some excellent link plays between the Forwards & Backs, Devizes were found short in defence out wide. Frome’s Fly Half Ben Eley dummied well and ran between the stretched backs to score. Eley adding the extras.
Due to several Devizes injuries the Scrums were now uncontested and the next two try’s came from the set piece, firstly No.8 Toten on another jinking run went from the Devizes 22, with the opposition 9 and 10 unable to prevent him from scoring. Eley in hand to add the extras.
Toten now moving to Flanker it was replacement No. 8 Stuart Elliott who picked from the back of the Scrum and went again in the Devizes 22 and crashing his way over, the kick going wide.
The final try of the game saw eventual Man of the Match Toten finish off a barrage of Frome attack dotting down wide. The conversion being added by Eley.
Final Score: Devizes RFC 2nd 0 - 41 Frome RFC 2nd
Man of the Match, sponsored by The Old Bath Arms, Frome went to Ross Toten.
Frome remain unbeaten in 19 games in the Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts 2 North league with only 3 remaining fixtures. If they win 1 of the next 3 games they will have won the title.
Frome have a gap in fixtures next weekend, but return to action vs 2nd place Westbury RFC 1st XV on Saturday 23rd of March.
