GUFC returned to Somersham, the place which ended last season’s title challenge. The rearlights got off to a cracking start creating numerous opportunities. Tom Baker who graduated to the first team last season scored with a fine finish from outside the box on his first start of the season. GUFC were guilty of wasting a few chances, with three one-on-ones saved by the home team keeper, at half time Gamlingay had a slender 1-0 win. The second half was a scrappy affair with few real chances for either team, the GUFC defence switched off midway through the half leaving GK James Worboys (Standing in for regular keeper Flappy, who’s son was born that morning, congratulations to Flappy and Donna) stranded, Worboys was helpless as he was rounded and the home side equalised. With about 15 minutes to go, Tom Mac hobbled forward for a corner and picked up a loose ball, he coolly controlled the ball and poked home, before being substituted, luckily for him as I don’t think he’d have made it back to defend. Some resolute defending in the final minutes as Somersham gave everything to equalise but Gamgy stood firm to get the first three points of the season.
