As may have been expected Avenue dominated possession in the first half but surprisingly lacked quality in front of goal; the ball boys in the T.L Dallas Stand kept busier than Ben Hunter in the Garforth goal. Town dropped deep and (as you can read on Non League Yorkshire) looked to frustrate our Conference North opponents.

The first big chance came on 9 mins for the 'home' side when Chibuzor Chilaka's low drive from a narrow angle was saved by Hunter. Only a minute later Simon Ainge headed over at the back post Joe Colbeck's delivery. On 21 mins ex-Town striker Paul Walker made a decent run and forced a good stop from Hunter with a powerful drive from 25 yards. Avenue were awarded a number of set-pieces throughout the game which they largely wasted, although one which nearly resulted in a goal came on 23 mins when Steve Boothman curled inches over the bar from just outside the box.

Our first chance finally came from a free-kick on 26 mins, Luke Mangham shooting just wide after being teed up by a tireless Sinmi Oyebanji.

Into the second half and Avenue continued the offensive. Richard Marshall shot straight at Hunter with only a minute played and four mins later Ryan Qualter probably should've done better when getting on the end of Boothman's free kick at the far post but shot wide.

On 60 mins one of the Miners' handful of chances came about when some good football between Mangham and Nick Black ended in Sam Jones finding himself in space and firing just over the bar.

Yet another chance for Avenue came on 74 mins when a defensive header landed at the feet of Walker on the edge of the box but blazed over. By now it was looking like a single goal would settle the contest and four mins later it duly arrived for the team in green to kill off the resistance. An excellent bit of football saw sub Brad Barraclough set up Chilaka in the box who finished well into the bottom corner.

A Town counter-attack two mins later almost resulted in a quick equaliser. Mangham raced down the right and supplied Black to force a brilliant save from keeper John Danby; his first of the game.

Arguably the Miners' secret weapon, Mark Simpson was finally introduced on 81 mins, him and Tim Robertson replacing Oyebanji and Jassim Alali.

Five mins from time Avenue almost increased their lead when Marshall won the ball back 25 yards from goal but shot over the bar. The last chance of the game fell Garforth's way from a free kick 30 yards out. Sub Liam Royles stepped up but disappointingly his delivery was straight into the arms of Danby.

A brave and organised effort from Graham's young side who almost made things embarrassing for our opponents three divisions higher, but sadly not to be. Chilaka's strike had proved to be enough and his side went on to lift the trophy after a 24 year wait.
