Garforth's first chance came as early as 3 mins when Mark Simpson broke clear of the defence but shot straight at the keeper.
Penistone's came from a free kick on 13 mins taken by their number 8, his kick deceived the defence but Town stopper Dominic Smith did well to dive to keep it out of the far corner. Due to a lack of Penistone teamsheet I only have their numbers!
Returnee Curtly Martin-Wyatt was looking sharp and was already causing problems for the home rearguard. He was unlucky not to put the Miners ahead on 15 mins despite not seeming to have sight of goal, curling a shot onto the top of the crossbar. On 22 mins Daniel Harris had a good chance when put through by Sinmi Oyebanji but the keeper managed to tip his strike over.
Penistone's number 10 almost put his own side ahead a minute later when creating space at the edge of the box but shooting straight at Smith. On 28 mins another chance fell to Martin-Wyatt when he beat his man out wide and flashed a shot past the far post.
Two mins before half time Sam Jones tested the home stopper from a powerful free kick from 20 yards out.
Graham made a raft of changes at half time but it didn't take long for the chances to come. A couple of excellent moves from corners led to a deserved Garforth opener on 53 mins. Firstly Jones had a header saved, then an excellent delivery from Spencer Lund picked out Sam Clarkson in the box to head home.
Lively sub Nathan Perks almost made it 2-0 just three minutes later when a long ball forward wasn't dealt with by Penistone's sub keeper, the striker almost lobbing him to score but falling just wide.
The home side's best chances of the game came around the 77 min mark in a couple of goalmouth scrambles which saw Harris and sub Joel Scott clear off the line. Smith was called into action two mins later when Penistone's number 17 made a dangerous run forward and forced a save.
After being replaced at half time, Martin-Wyatt returned to the field with 15 mins left and continued to cause problems. On 80 mins he had the goal his performance deserved when he made a foray down the left and found the net with a great strike into the far corner.
Another goalmouth scramble was survived on 83 mins before Harris created a good chance after beating two defenders but fired over the bar.
A 2-0 win for The Miners, and an encouraging performance. As well as some attractive football going forward Town looked solid at the back with Simon Rodgers and Daniel Manfredi adding some much needed experience. Some good performances all over the field (sub Chris Simpkins also worthy of praise) could well see Graham having selection dilemmas on his hands.
Garforth are next in action at home this Saturday against Stocksbridge Park Steels, kick-off 3pm.
