Town earn their stripes after edging Hornets....

Luke Mangham's goal moments into the second half was the difference in a competitive game between two good footballing sides.

Both teams looked to get forward in the early stages and great work by Danny Harris down the left on 17 mins saw him put through Mark Simpson who shot straight at Steven Hubery in the Hebburn goal. The first chance for the visitors fell to lofty striker and captain Channon North two mins later after being set up Shaun Reay on the edge of the box, but likewise was unable to test Ben Hunter.

A decent move involving Simpson and Mangham ended in the latter firing over the bar on 21 mins, and five mins later down the other end Hunter made a routine save from Reay.

Both teams came within a whisker of opening the scoring in the final few mins of the half. A goalmouth scramble from a Hebburn corner ended in two shots being blocked on the line by Josh Moore (?) and a combination of Hubery and striker Calvin McMahon denied Mangham at close range after Moore picked out the striker from the left wing.

The Miners came out of the blocks flying for the second half and were ahead within a minute of the restart. Simpson made a run down the right and found Mangham at the edge of the box who finished well with a low strike into the bottom corner.

A good spell for the Hornets around the hour mark should have resulted in an equalizer but they couldn't find the finish. Two chances fell to Marc Costello who dragged a shot past the far post and then smashed over the bar from just outside the area. Sandwiched in between was a glorious chance for North after Jassim Alali gave the ball away in his own half, but he could only shoot wide with just Hunter to beat.

Simpson came close to making it 2-0 on 82 mins, firing into the side netting after a decent run by sub Spencer Lund and moments later Hunter saved a low effort from Hebburn sub Brian Johnson. The visitors thought they had an equalizer five mins from time when Glen Hargrave poked home a left wing cross at the far post, but the goal was chalked off by referee Adam Burgess for a foul on a Garforth defender.

A great win for the hard-working Miners and an excellent send off for departing Head Coach Graham Nicholas, Assistant Neil Jones and five of his players. What sort of Garforth side will contest the 2nd round of the Vase is a question for another day, but for the time being we'll enjoy the £900 prize money and our name in the hat for Monday's draw.
