An incredible five-goal haul from James Burgess, plus a Hass Gorji brace and one from Kevin Terheardt helped The Miners record their biggest competitive victory in 23 years.

Manager Paul Marshall made a number of changes from last Saturday's win at Winterton. Aaron Burn replaced Toby Wells in goal, full-back Alex Zachariou made his first start for the club, Helmo Silva and captain Dan Coupland returned to the side after holidays, and midfielder Duke Witter made his first start since returning from the injury sustained at Thackley in August.

Garforth enjoyed the better of the early chances with James Burgess seeing a shot blocked by Glasshoughton 'keeper Sam Riches on the edge of the box, then Dan Coupland put a low effort just wide of the far post.

A chance for the visitors on 19 mins saw former Town man Fidel Mhlolo shoot narrowly wide after winning the ball 20 yards from goal. Hass Gorji was unlucky not to open the scoring moments later when his header from Helmo Silva's delivery produced a great save from Riches. The Miners took the lead on 26 mins however when Burgess was played through to fire across Riches into the bottom corner of the net.

The pace of Glasshoughton's Lewis Stephens caused problems for our defence at times, and he earned his side a penalty on 33 mins after tangling with Kevin Terhaerdt in the box. Up stepped Adam Hayton to fire straight down the middle and level the scoring. The visitors had the better of what remained of the first half, although the closest they came to taking the lead came when Stephens shot wide from a left-wing cross.

Few watching would surely have expected what was to come after the break, even after two goals in the first six minutes put Town in control. Burgess shot just wide after a good move down the right, but we had the lead once again when Silva made his way along the byeline and supplied Gorji to steer home. Silva provided once again for Town's third on 51 mins, playing in Burgess to score with a cracking strike off the inside of the post.

There was a rare chance for Welfare when Samuel Nelson's fizzing strike was saved at the second attempt by Burn. Silva almost grabbed Town's fourth when his header from Alex Zachariou's cross found the side netting. Burgess completed his hattrick on 66 mins after beating his man on the edge of the box and finding the bottom corner with a well-placed strike (4-1). Down the other end, substitute Sam Leach almost had an own goal to his name seconds after coming on when trying to cut out Jordan Chippendale's left wing cross, but Burn was there to save his blushes.

From then on the game turned into 'The James Burgess Show', with the visitors unable to handle the big number nine's quality and sheer determination. Not content with just goals, he had an assist to his name on 74 mins. Winning the ball back on the left, he supplied Gorji in the box to score at the second attempt for Town's fifth. We continued to press forward, and went on to bag three more in the last ten minutes. Burgess had his fourth after an unsuccessful attempt at an overhead kick, winning back the ball and firing home from a narrow angle. Undeterred, he tried again soon after, acrobatically converting Zachariou's delivery for an incredible fifth. Some way to get yourself in Town's record books; according to current records only Darren Falk and Peter Taylor have previously scored five in one game. The scoring was completed two minutes from time when Terheardt's header from sub Jack McGahan's corner kick looped over everyone and found the net.

A fantastic evening for everyone involved with the club, and especially so for a handful of seasoned Town fans present who witnessed a defeat by the same scoreline at Leeds Road back in January 2001, incidentally the last time the two sides met in the competition.

National League North neighbours Farsley Celtic are our opponents in the next round, on a date to be confirmed. Meanwhile The Miners are back in league action this Saturday, when Sherwood Colliery visit the Bannister Prentice Stadium (kick-off 3pm).
