Local rivals prove Fare game for the miners

This fixture rounded of a week of three home games against local rivals. Having taken four points from Nostell and Albion Sports (the second being a particularly good performance), Garforth were high on confidence. In contrast, Welfare had taken just four points from their six league games this season.

Having failed to beat Glasshoughton last season, Graham Nicholas' will have been expecting another battle on his hands, if nothing else. This failed to happen and the visitors were overwhelmed from the kick off when Jay Davis' shot seconds into the game would be the first of a staggering thirty one efforts from the Miners.

It took Garforth twenty eight minutes to register, when Danny Harris finally opened his account for the club. The versatile left footer has had some great efforts in recent weeks and when the ball fell to his “wand” this time, he rifled an unstoppable shot past Joshua Archer.

Davis and Nick Black weren't having much luck as they peppered the Glasshoughton goal, but Andrew Hawksworth came to the for with two of Garforths three strikes in a seven minute spell either side of half time.

The flying full back started and finished one of the moves of the season on forty one minutes and Welfares woes were increased when their captain, Blaine Kellett was sent off for uncharacteristically stamping down in a challenge on davis just before the break.

In boxing terms, Glasshoughton were already on the ropes, but when Town unleashed a quick one-two on them straight from the restart, the contest should have been stopped.

Sam Akeroyd smashed in a forty seven minute penalty after Harris had been up-ended, then a minute later, captain fantastic was at it again. A beautiful left foot curler put Garforth four up.

Nick Black, fittingly got the goal he deserved on seventy three minutes when he scrambled the ball over the line following good work from Davis out wide.

Welfare had a couple of efforts, but were never in the game.

The result took Garforth to seventh in the table
