Marshall on target with a remarkable four goals as Town record their biggest competitive away win in seven years.

Midfielder Connor Mayall made his first competitive start to the season, allowing Dan Coupland to deputise at the back for an unavailable Sam Denton.

Even at half time it was a result few would’ve predicted. The hosts went ahead as early as eight minutes in when Regan Waud headed in at the back post Nathan Keightley’s corner kick. Happily for Town the deficit wasn’t to last. Straight from the restart the ball was played through the middle for Marshall to shoot low past the onrushing Goole ‘keeper Ethan Cotton. Lee Turner saw a header saved when he got on the end of Jack Lazenby’s free kick a few minutes later, then down the other end Toby Wells denied Anees Younis when he got clear, but was in any case ruled offside.

There was a stoppage in play on 24 mins when Keightley was on the end of a bad challenge from Jack McGahan and had to be carried off the field. Let’s hope he’s back playing again soon.

On 27 mins Marshall came close to a second when Alex Burton’s delivery across the six-yard box found him at the back post, but he hit just wide. The midfielder only had to wait three minutes though, finding the bottom corner of the net after Lazenby’s shot was blocked inside the area.

Further chances were traded as half time loomed. Jason Kitchen headed over the bar from close range for the hosts from a Younis cross, Burton shot just wide of the far post after Sam Barker’s effort was parried, then Waud’s header was claimed by Wells from a Jordan Emery long throw-in. Lazenby then saw a free-kick from a good position turned wide for a corner kick.

Missing the aerial abilities of centre-backs Denton and Jamie Barkway, Town were undone again from a set-piece seconds before the break. A Younis corner kick was delivered deep into the box, and with Town failing to clear their lines, Waud was on hand again to bundle the ball into the net to bring the Vikings back into the game.

It took The Miners less than ten seconds from the restart to regain the lead, and they went on to ruthlessly exploit weaknesses in the Vikings’ defence by adding four more unanswered goals. Straight from kick-off the ball was played through a static defence for Marshall to nip in and fire past Cotton to complete his hattrick. A minute later he was denied a fourth when Cotton diverted his low shot beyond the far post, then Barker saw a 20-yard strike tipped over the bar. On 56 mins we extended our lead further. Barker saw another shot blocked, but the ball came out wide to Lazenby who beat a man and found the far corner of the net from a tight angle. A third goal in three games now for the midfielder, was he really once a defender? Four minutes later it was five when a loose ball in the box came to Turner who got enough on a challenge with a defender for the ball to fly over the despairing Cotton and into the top corner.

His teammate Marshall wasn’t finished just yet and saved his best goal for last. On 64 minutes the ball was played across from right to left for the young midfielder to grab his fourth with a sweet strike into the top corner (6-2). Marshall became the first Town player in ten years to achieve this feat, the last being Adam Priestley in a 5-3 win at Sheffield FC in September 2010. Three minutes later Barker finally got on the scoresheet when controlling and finishing at the far post Leach’s delivery to make it seven.

The hosts showed character in the final twenty minutes to try and reduce the arrears – Waud forced a good stop from the feet of Wells, then the Town stopper was forced to tip over the bar a Younis strike after dangerous play from Jaydan Sandhu down the right.

After that the two teams decided the assembled spectators had got their money’s worth and Paul Marshall’s side could celebrate an outstanding win. After all that excitement, we return to the Bannister Prentice Stadium next Saturday when Grimsby Borough are the visitors (kick-off 3pm).
