Garstang Win a Scrappy Encounter Against Fourteen Man Birchfield

GARSTANG 19-12 BIRCHFIELD
Garstang’s pitch being flooded on the previous weekend along with wet weather meant that the club took the decision to move the game up the road to Preston Grasshoppers on their Artificial Grass Pitch. With ‘Hoppers having no team at home this meant that the game could be played at a conventional kick off time of 14:30.
However, on the day things didn’t go entirely to plan as Birchfield only turned up with fourteen players and could not field a front row. The latter fact meant that the game could not be played as a competitive league contest and Garstang were awarded a home bonus point win with a 0-0 result.
Despite this, both sides were keen to play as Garstang had made the effort to arrange the pitch and fourteen Birchfield players and a few officials had made the journey.
The game was a bit of a strange one as Garstang lost out on one of their huge strengths with their scrummaging and this in fact turned out to be a disadvantage as Birchfield fielded backs and back row forwards in the front row while Garstang had two regular props and a hooker up front! This led to the bizarre situation where every time Birchfield got a penalty or other option they chose to take a scrum despite the fact they could not compete. I am no expert on the laws of the game but if this is not illegal it should be!
Garstan, as you would expect dominated, but the game was really scrappy and a game Birchfield side kept them honest at all times. An early Garstang try was cancelled out before Garstang extended the lead to be ahead 12-5 at the break. A further Garstang try sealed the win but Birchfield scored at the death to make the scoreline hugely respectable at 19-12 for the fourteen men. Garstang’s three try scorers on the day were Joel Dugdale, Max Everest and Elliot Davies Taylor with Kieran Davies converting a couple of them.
Team: Miller, Wilkinson, Parkinson, Davies Taylor, Johnston, Pye, Kelsall, Everest, Rowbottom, Davies, Nickson, Dugdale, Knowles, Thompson, Hewitt. Replacements: Barton, Hodgson, Bisby.
Next up for the team is an away trip to Congleton on Saturday 19th October, KO 15:00. There will be a bus to the game which leaves the club at 11:45 and returns for 20:30.
