WIND SPOILS GAME

However good 5 point win.

Team as selected and as said above it was very windy with the wind blowing across the pitch into the faces of us bankies!
We had a very young front row who would be tested by the experienced & large Horden front row.
We kicked off & Conner Anderson nearly caught it & if he had I think he would have been clear through!
Horden were playing a strong driving game and Gateshead were trying to use the backs but also picking and driving. Right from the off our scrum was under pressure. Johnny Foster was putting some nice long kicks into the bottom corner using the wind. However both sides were struggling to win good line out ball. First blood to Gateshead with Scott Cartner kicking penalty to make it 3-0.
Horden were at the Gateshead line several times but the Gateshead defence was resolute and survived a few scares. We also had a couple of chances with a score looking on the cards but a wrong option was taken.
Eventually it was David Tate who made a cracking break to off load to Johnny Foster who scored near the posts for Scott to kick the conversion. 10-0.
Horden had the best of the end of the half and were unlucky not to score. Half time 10-0.
Horden continued where they left off and continued to put pressure on Gateshead and especially in the scrum and were awarded a scrum near the Gateshead line and were heading for a pushover. The ball squirted out and the ref awarded a penalty try. Personally I think the No 8 had lost control but there you go! 10-7.
They continued to put on the pressure and got another try a few minutes later, converted 10-14! At this stage things didn’t look too promising for Gateshead but they stuck to it and a good break out saw the ball go through the hands and a good dummy by Martin Pluskal that on old No 8 would have been quite proud of saw Scott Cartner score in the corner. 15-14.
Horden got back into the Gateshead half and got another 15-19. David Tate got one for Gateshead, converted by Scott, 22-19. Exciting stuff for the spectators!
Then what really sealed the game was when it looked like Horden were going to score but they messed it up and David Tate snaffled the ball and was away. Only 75 yards to run, no problem looking good then with about 30 to go his legs were transferred into his Uncle Tom’s and he was flagging but thankfully Matt Rawlinson who had not been on the field long was up in support to race away & score, converted by Scott 29-19. The Horden defender was penalised for sliding in on Mark and Gateshead were awarded a penalty on the half way line for kick off.
Surely game over? Horded however did not give up and attacked at the end and got another penalty try from a scrum to make the final score 29-16.
Despite the wind. Which I think ruins rugby we got a 5 point bonus win so all is hood with that. So we had a hard time in the scrums. What I do know is that especially when Charlie Head came on our average age in the front row was less than 20 and if our young lads learn from what they went through rather than think if it as a bad thing then this will bode well for them in the future. Ask any old front row man and he will tell he learnt his trade by getting a hard time off experienced players.
Can’t fault the commitment and the tackling was excellent throughout and the result gets us up another notch in the league so no complaints there. As usual a good chat & the odd half or two with our Horden counterparts after the game.
Keep the commitment going boys!
