The hosts were looking to build on last Friday’s draw at Kirby Muxloe and just 4 minutes into the game they led. Jahren Barrow found Ruben Wiggins-Thomas who did brilliantly to hold the ball up and feed in Jack Jepson who cut inside of his man and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner for his 3rd goal in 2 games.
However, just 30 seconds later Grantham were awarded a penalty after Gedling failed to clear their lines. Louis Richardson saved the spot kick by diving to his left and keeping the hosts lead intact.
In what was turning into a real battle with no real chances for either side in the first half, the best chance fell to Jepson after 17 minutes. He found some space on the edge of the box but he fired his effort wide of the right-hand post.
The 2nd half began as the 1st half had finished with little for each keeper to do. Richardson had to be on his guard to deny a shot from the edge of the 18 yard which he tipped away.
With 76 minutes gone the UCL newcomers should have grabbed an equalizer, after some neat play down the right a dangerous cross fizzed past the Gedling backline but the forward could only blaze his effort over from 8 yards.
In the 3rd minute of stoppage time the boys in yellow and blue should have doubled their advantage. A poor back pass allowed Courtney Hastings to burst 1 on 1 with the Grantham keeper but he could only fire his effort straight at him from 10 yards but it was the last chance of the game and Gedling climbed the league to 12th after victory.
Joint Manager Andy Clerke said “The lads got the job done tonight we would have liked to have scored more but at the end of the day its 3 more points” Also, other Joint Manager Stephen Kirkham added “We are 5 unbeaten now with 2 clean sheets in that it took us a while to find things out but we are happy with the progression and now we need to kick on.”
