Miners swept aside by the Vics

BORROWASH VICS........5
(Greenhalgh, Green, Mottershead, Pileiro, Kellogg)
GEDLING MW.................0

The recent fine form shown by the young Miners team came to a shuddering halt at the Watkinson Bowl as the Vics steamrolled an out of sorts Gedling side. The visitors started brightly enough with Rhys Jeffery showing some fine wing wizadrdry and the hard working Kieron Wells showing the home defence that they would be in for a tough evening. The Vics slowly started to apply pressure and coming into the contest spurred on by the excellent Paolo Piliero and the bustling Andrew Motterehead up front. The direct play of the Vics bought reward by way of a penalty in the 32nd minute. A bouncing ball into the area wasn’t cleared and before it could reach Pileiro to the left of the area, Colin Woodward made an unnecessary challenge on the winger with a crude challenge. Mottershead stepped up but Rhys Watkinson made a super save with his body.

In the 40th minute a long unchallenged run and pass down the left by full back saw the opening goal swept home by ex Miner Ben Greehhalgh. At the other end Lewis Capewell saw his shot cleared off the line by a defender following a corner.

Six minutes into the second half and the second home penalty. Wells, on defensive duties tripped Pileiro in the box. Skipper Sam Kellogg took over the spot kick duties. Different taker, but same result, as once again Watkinson kept out the shot brilliantly and the ball was cleared for a corner. A minute later and the lead was doubled. Once again the defence failed to clear the ball and Chris Green was on hand at the far post to steer home his header.

Still the Vics forward play was unrelenting and, midway through the half the game was over as a contest. David Hind powered forward past a static midfield down the right and his inch perfect cross was volleyed home by Mottershead into the top corner.

Not learning from that lesson, Gedling allowed Hind the freedom of Borrowash to do it all again as he skipped dsown the right flank and into the heart of the Yellow and Blue defence to set up the fourth. This time Pileiro was the happy recipient who steered the ball into the bottom corner across Watkinson.

What threat Gedling did pose came from some inspired left wing play from Jeffery, who was emerging as the visitor’s best attacking option. Lack of support for Wells up top with little help from his midfield colleagues was proving the catalyst and, in all honesty, the Miners never looked like troubling the Statistics Secretary at Mitoo.

The game was done and dusted nine minutes from time when Kellogg made up for his penalty miss with an unstoppable shot for the fifth.

A bad night at the office for Gedling. The award of Man of the Match to a ‘keeper who had conceded five aptly sums up the poor performance. Lessons need to be learned, and quickly. Tougher tasks lie ahead. Application and individual responsibility need to be addressed or it could be a long and painful season.
