Gedling went into this game on the back of three straight defeats and one point from their last 5 games, but on the positive side manager had more options to pick from as players returned from injuries and unavailability.
Gedling made the best possible start to the game when striker Anthony Bedward flicked the ball on for the impressive Rhys Jeffrey to hold off a challenge and slot home after two minutes. However Gedling’s lead didn’t last long as Blackwell’s Adam Campbell was allow time in the box unmarked to flick home the equaliser. The opening ten minutes still had a further goal to give and again it was Gedling who took the lead with a fine header from Anthony Bedward that bounced down off the crossbar and in before Blackwell’s backline could react – 2.1. The home side added two more before the break with goals in similar circumstances, both unopposed headers inside the six yard box courtesy of defender David Leak and Tom Widdowson. Half Time 3-2.
Gedling again got an early goal at the beginning of the half with Courtney Bonnick opening his Gedling account with a quality finish that all inside the ground could admire. There were then chances at both ends in an entertaining game for the neutral as both teams pushed for the win. This honour fell to 3rd from top Blackwell in the 90th minute when super sub and ex- Gedling MW player Stephen Cox pounced on a rebound and slotted home from 8 yards. Full Time 4-3
An encouraging performance from Gedling in a game they really didn’t deserve to lose and on another day they would have put away their hatful of chances and been out of sight well before Stephen Cox’s winner but in the footballing world when you are at the bottom things usually don’t go your way. We move on and travel to Derbyshire side Graham St Prims next weekend and if we put in this type of performance again it will only be a matter of time before this squad of players start to reap the rewards for all their hard work.
MOM – Tom Watson. Head and shoulders the best midfielder on the park today. Ran and ran, broke up the play and never wasted a pass.
