St Andrews……3 (Hickey 37, Saunders 38, Hollis 78)
Winless streak goes on….
St Andrews inflicted more misery on the Miners with a well deserved victory at Plains Road.
Ben Middleton had the game’s first chance in the fourth minute after he was gifted the ball by visiting keeper Lewis Marlow. The No. 9 appeared to have a rush of blood and instead of simply placing the ball into the far corner he hammered it high, wide and not very handsome.
The Saints had a decent chance on 9 minutes, but Lance Walker was able to keep out Brady Hickey at the far post.
James Price had a 25 yard effort well saved by Marlow after 22 minutes had been played, then 8 minutes later the winger also saw the keeper dive well to save his 25 yard free-kick.
St. Andrews took the lead on 37 after Pele Williams fired the ball across the goal from the left picking out the excellent Eliot Coring on the other flank. Coring fired the ball back to the far post and Brady Hickey was on hand to pick his spot and fire past Walker.
A minute later and the lead was doubled. Coring fired in a superb cross from the right that centre-forward Richard Saunders connected with a powerful header that flew past Walker.
The second half was much of the same with the home team huffing and puffing but unable to find a way past a resolute Saints defence although Gedling upped their game markedly with the introduction of subs Liam Woodward and Rob Houghton.
When a strong challenge on Chris Muldoon saw the full back dispossessed near the left corner flag in the 78th minute the Welfare defence seemed to wait for a whistle from Mr Robertson. The Saints players played on and when the ball was fired in at the near post, substitute Sam Hollis lifted the ball beyond Walker to secure the points for the away team. Hollis could have inflicted more damage on the home team in the final minute but for a smart stop from Walker.
St. Andrews looked to be a very young team and as the game progressed, their youthful legs coped much better with the sticky pitch and in the end were comfortable, well deserved winners.
