Gedling fall to third straight league defeat

Gedling MW .............0
Kimberley MW............5 (Parkes 8', Rose 54', 62', 77', 88')

Gedling Miners Welfare were beaten at home on Tuesday by Kimberley but in truth the scoreline didn’t reflect the close nature of a competitive match.

The difference proved to be the visitors’ clinical finishing which gave them a convincing looking result.

The Miners, however, did make a very slow start to the match. In the opening 20 seconds goalkeeper Matthew Simpson was called into action and made a sharp save with his legs to keep the scores level.

In the eighth minute the visitors took the lead. Luis Parkes twisted and turned on the edge of the area before hitting a good strike from the edge of the area which Simpson got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.

Five minutes later, Gedling thought they’d equalised when Ruben Wiggins-Thomas produced an acrobatic finish only to see it chalked off for offside.

Just over twenty minutes in, Aaron Coyle missed a glorious opportunity to double the visitors’ lead. A low cross from the left found him unmarked near the penalty spot but he couldn’t find an accurate finish and dragged his shot wide.

Ten minutes later, Gedling came close to an equaliser. Greg Tempest played a delightful ball to find Niall Hylton but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

As half time neared, Coyle worked himself another good opportunity but brought a good save from Simpson.

Gedling began the second half really strongly as they pressed for an equaliser. Niall Hylton found himself through on goal but he couldn’t keep his shot down.

Kimberley punished Gedling’s lack of cutting edge in the 54th minute completely against the run of play. Luis Rose’s shot beat Simpson and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Gedling again responded well to going behind and almost found a way back into the match as Tempest’s corner was headed inches wide by Josh Thornton.

With just over an hour gone, Rose struck again. A fantastic run down the wing culminated in a sharp finish and seemingly sealed the game for the visitors.

Gedling kept attacking as they desperately tried to get a foothold in the game with Tempest and Liam Corrigan both going close.

However, with just over ten minutes remaining Kimberley won a penalty and Rose hammered the ball into the roof of the net to complete his hattrick.

Rose then helped himself to his fourth and Kimberley’s fifth just before full time to cap off a productive half.

The referee’s whistle sound shortly afterwards to confirm Gedling’s third straight league defeat.

Manager Andy Clerke said: "Really disappointing scoreline this evening that, with the exception of the last 15 minutes where the game had gone, we really didn’t think reflected the game.

"Without doubt Kimberley were clinical and have done their job but they had four shots on target at the point it went 0-3 which hurts.

"The first half was a really even affair and we certainly started the second half on top and should have equalised. Looking back, that was the turning point in the evening, a soft penalty and deflection late in the game pretty much summed up the luck of the two sides at this moment in time.

"Credit to Kimberley, they’re a good side, they look fit, hungry and have a desire that I believe will see them right in the mix come the end of the season.

"Our job now is to bounce back quickly; we have 8 games in November and have plenty of time to erase three poor results."
