Gedling beaten by league leaders

Gedling Miners Welfare suffered their fourth straight league defeat as they were beaten four nil away at high flying Aylestone Park who moved to the top of the league courtesy of the win.

It was a cagey opening to the game with no clear cut chances in the opening few minutes as both teams tried to wrestle control of the game.

When the first chance did arrive in the tenth minute, it fell to the hosts. A corner from the left wing was delivered into the penalty area and met well by defender Joe Latham who had escaped his marker. However, the ball cannoned back off the crossbar and bounced away as Gedling survived the early scare.

A minute later though, Aylestone did take the lead. Gedling gave possession away cheaply in defence and the hosts worked it to Tom Hill who found the back of the net with a precise finish.

The Miners responded well to going behind and almost levelled the scores a few minutes later. A rushed clearance from the hosts’ goalkeeper went straight to Gedling’s captain Josh Thornton. He attempted to float the ball over the top of him and into the back of the net but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.

Gedling kept pressing and Niall Hylton was the next man to go close. He burst into the penalty area but hit his effort straight at the ‘keeper who was able to make a comfortable save.

The rest of the half passed without much incident as Aylestone contained Gedling and did their best to protect their narrow advantage.

With half time nearing, Craig Meakin, making his first start for Gedling was sent to the sin bin for speaking out of turn.

Gedling made sure to keep things tight for the remaining seconds of the half, being a man down, to ensure they reached half time just one goal behind.

The start of the second half made for a much better spectacle than much of the first as both sides began to find their rhythm and looked to get on the front foot.

Hill almost had his and Aylestone Park’s second six minutes after the restart as he speculatively tried his luck from distance and completely caught Gedling ‘keeper Matthew Simpson out, only to see the ball hit the crossbar and bounces over the top for a goal kick.

Gedling reacted well with a chance of their own just three minutes later. Thornton knocked the ball down for Greg Tempest who was just inside the penalty area. He hit the ball on the half volley and saw it whistle just wide of the target with the ‘keeper beaten.

A minute later, a clever corner routine saw Tempest pick out Thornton on the edge of the box. He struck his shot firmly on target but the ‘keeper got down well to parry it away and deny Gedling an equaliser.

Then just before the hour mark arguably came the turning point of the match. Gedling thought they had equalised from a corner but the referee disallowed it for a penalty area infringement which had the Gedling fans stunned and looked an incredibly harsh decision.

Meakin, who had completed his ten minute sin bin stint by this point, then had a go. He smashed a shot from the edge of the area and was unlucky to see it clear the crossbar.

All these missed opportunities came back to bite Gedling as Aylestone Park made them pay for not taking their chances. Completely against the run of play they found the back of the net for the second time in the game in the 63rd minute. Lloyd Patterson misjudged a defensive header and the hosts broke away down the left wing. They cut the ball back and Lee Barratt, who was completely unmarked, arrived to drill the ball calmly into the back of the net.

Four minutes later Aylestone further extended their advantage as Danny Dixon diverted Aaron Nuttall’s cross into his own net.

Gedling tried to hit back as Tempest unleashed a shot from just outside the area but it landed on top of the net.

A minute later the hosts’ leading marksman Shay Brennan added another to his impressive tally so far this campaign. He surged into the right hand side of the box and produced a superb lob that left Simpson rooted to the spot, sailed over his head and found the back of the net.

Gedling’s day went from bad to worse as with ten minutes remaining Oliver Papworth who had only been on the pitch for a handful of minutes was the recipient of a very physical challenge and had to be stretchered off the field of play. Thankfully his injury wasn’t anywhere near as serious as first feared.

There was time for one last chance as Tempest whipped in another delightful corner but Thornton could only put his header wide.

Shortly afterwards the referee blew the final whistle to bring to an end a disappointing day in Leicestershire for The Miners.
