Prior to kick off a minutes silence was observed by the two sides and League officials as a mark of respect to a talented young player who will be sorely missed by all.
Gilwern, wearing black armbands, began the game with a very somber slow pace and the game was quite scrappy with both sides creating chances but failing to hit the target. After 20 minutes Gilwern woke up to the task and after a fine tackle in midfield by Dan Phillips and sending young Aled Pridey, making his full debut, down the right wing who crossed the ball and was met by Ben Burgoyne who hit a crisp venomous half volley into the bottom corner leaving the Blaenavon keeper grasping fresh air. It was not long before Blaenavon found an equaliser from a suspicious free kick on the edge of the box. The score remained 1-1 at half time.
The second half saw a much improved Gilwern who were hungry to get a result and were quickly to take advantage with Adam Carrington scoring his first of a brace from a corner. and quickly added another 5 minutes later. Gilwern were now 3-1 up and playing with authority but then the traditional Blaenavon fightback began who scored their second and pressing hard and it took a magnificent save by keeper Dan Hook, one on one with the striker, to keep the score 3-2. General Gandera and Mark Prosser were introduced with 20 minutes to go strengthening midfield. Dan Gandera smashed a shot across goal which was superbly saved by the Blaenavon keeper only for it to fall to Joey McCarthy to tap in for Gilwerns 4th goal. The score could have been a lot higher if Mark Prosser had put his boots on the right feet as he missed three golden chances. The game ended 4-2 with Gilwern well on top.
Manager Tony Carrington stated "Blaenavon always appear to up their game against us and today was no exception, they gave us a real tough game but I thought we were certainly the better side and Mazza and I are extremely proud of these boys who played in very difficult emotional circumstances but did young Thomas and his family proud. Blaenavon also played their part for which Gilwern FC are extremely grateful".
