Glapwell climb to second!

This was another good performance by Glapwell who seem to be building up some real momentum after a fifth successive league win which has seen them notch 31 goals in the process and they have climbed into second place in the league, trailing leaders Appleby by only a point having played a game less.
It marks Glapwell’s best league run for a year when they also notched up five straight league victories and also maintains the perfect away record with five victories on the road from five matches.
Glapwell made a bright start to the game and took the lead after only five minutes. Josh Parfitt was fouled by Callum Taylor on the edge of the area and Adam Kimberley stepped up and curled the free-kick inside the near post to give Glapwell the lead.
The home side had the chance to bounce back almost immediately when the ball fell to Luke Farrar, who was a late replacement to the starting line-up after an injury to Brad Vann in the warm-up, but Ryan Hopkins was equal to his shot as he tipped it around the post.
Glapwell had the chance on 14 minutes to double their advantage when Adam Kimberley played the ball over to Josh Parfitt from the left but Parfitt miss-hit his shot with the ball falling for Kimberley but he was denied by Dominic Senior in the home goal.
It really should have been 2-0 on 19 minutes when another good move saw Kimberley play in Sam Bartram down the right and his pull-back was slightly behind Josh Parfitt but fell for Adam Barratt who could only fire a shot straight at Senior.
Seconds later, though, Glapwell’s lead was doubled when Mitchell Mullins played a great ball into the path of Josh Parfitt who didn’t strike his shot cleanly but it still had enough on it to beat the keeper and nestle inside the far post.
After a couple of ridiculously petty bookings by the referee, the home side really should have pulled a goal back just after the half hour when a ball from the right found Andy Fairclough but he couldn’t get anything on it when a couple of yards from goal.
But just as it looked like Glapwell would go into the break with a comfortable two-goal advantage, the home side reduced their arrears right on the stroke of the interval as Rod Pursehouse held off a weak challenge before lifting the ball over Ryan Hopkins from eight yards.
The home side made a change at the interval as they sniffed a way back into the game which they really shouldn’t have been allowed to have but Glapwell could have regained their two-goal advantage on 48 minutes but Ross Murcott headed over the bar from Tom Norris’ corner.
Two minutes later a good run by Daniel Russell, who did well to hold off a challenge, nearly resulted in number three for Glapwell but he was denied by a great fingertip save by Dominic Senior while from the resultant corner Russell headed over.
Glapwell didn’t have to wait too long for their two-goal advantage to be restored, though, as Mitchell Mullins’ strong run into the area was bought to an end with Josh Parfitt rolling the resultant penalty home for his 10th goal of the season.
That goal calmed everything down and it was a much more relaxed second period with the home side still giving everything to the cause while Glapwell played some good stuff up to the final third.
Midway through the second period, Glapwell’s advantage was extended again as a good move resulted in Tom Norris playing in Parfitt down the right who, in turn, cut the ball back to Daniel Russell whose goalbound flick was guided over the line by Jack Hutchinson from a yard out.
Glapwell added their fifth on 79 minutes when another good team move was finished off by Tom Norris who headed home from Josh Clayton’s cross from the right.
Overall, another good team performance that could have resulted in a bigger victory but a second straight 5-1 victory lifts Glapwell up to second in the table and they now trail the leaders by only a point with a game in hand.
They return to Hall Corner on Saturday for the visit of second-bottom Dinnington Town and kick-off will be 2pm due to light.
