WELFARE HIT FOUR WITH IN A GOOD WIN

GARRY MOLLON
- GARRY MOLLON

Glasshoughton Welfare moved into 10th place in the Northern Counties East League (Division 1 ) table after a fine 4-2 win at a windy TJs Arena stadium against Rossington Main on Saturday.

Nathan Perks gave welfare the early lead and big defender Adam Walsh headed his sixth goal of the season to give welfare a comfortable lead at the half-time break. Lee Holmes gave the visitors hope before Matt Semley again increased welfare's lead. Declan Howe got a second for the visitors and they then had a penalty saved before Ryan Poskitt sealed the points minutes before time for the hosts.

Welfare had Max Dearnley in goal in place of the unavailable Jacob Collier and Gareth Hunter and Ryan Poskitt came back in from the side who faced Skegness Town in the previous game.

On a very uneven surface welfare got off to a great start taking the lead on 4 minutes. Great passing between Craig Tonkinson and Semley saw the ball released to Poskitt whose first time shot was blocked but Perks cut inside with it before firing past Callum Fielding.

Minutes later Perks should have had a second but volleyed a cross wide of a post.

As the visitors came back Dearnley was quick off his line to collect the ball to thwart an attempt on goal.

Welfare got their second on 24 minutes when Poskitt hit a disputed corner kick to the edge of the 6 yard area and Walsh charged in like a bull in a china shop to head down and over covering defenders into the top corner.

Walsh was in the wars soon after when he was subjected to a horrible lunge by Sam Fewkes which saw the visiting player receive a straight red card.

Rossington opened the second half on top and Howe headed a cross into the hands of Dearnley.

Dearnley then turned a shot from a Howe shot for a corner but sadly the keeper was caught flat footed from the resulting corner as the Lee Holmes corner kick floated over him into the far corner of the net.

Two minutes later welfare got their third after good work from Poskitt and Mbire Zavanai. The ball reached Semley on the left and he slotted it past Fielding.

Seven minutes later welfare were rocked again when a high ball in saw Howe loop a header over Dearnley via a post.

The visitors had a great chance to equalise on 72 minutes when Sam Pashley was harshly penalised for tripping Howe. Dearnley however produced a brilliant save pushing the powerful Holmes penalty kick onto a post.

Welfare attacked again and somehow the visitors managed to clear two efforts off the goal line.

The points were sealed for welfare on 85 minutes when Mbire broke free on the left. The ball was hit in and after a block Poskitt took a touch and calmly beat Fielding.

Welfare joint manager Darren Holmes commented after the game, "Has to be said it was a game of 2 halves today. The team that played the conditions better were always going to do well. The wind and pitch were a huge factor .I think we dominated the first half We limited Rossington to just a couple of chances and kept the ball well in the right areas and . were well worth our 2 0 half time lead. The second half was a different matter. Rossington made it very difficult for us pushed us back and we made hard work of things. Credit to them they kept pushing and forced a couple of errors that resulted in goals. Thankfully we continued to create chances and scored 2 more very good goals in the second half. All in all we are very pleased with the 3 points and it's now 10 from 15 so the little run continues and we take that to Harworth next Saturday.
