POSKITT PENALTY SECURES THE POINTS FOR WELFARE

GARRY MOLLON
- GARRY MOLLON

Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Darren Holmes's immediate reaction to his sides win at Shirebrook Town on Saturday was "A win is a win". How true his words are as he saw his side claim their second win in five days with a narrow win at Shirebrook Town on Saturday.

This was far from a pretty affair at a sunny Langwith Road and only a first half Ryan Poskitt penalty separated the sides which now sees welfare unbeaten in three games.

Welfare were well under strength for the game missing Nathan Perks, Tom Carr, Adam Walsh, Olly Maude and Obeyanji Sinmi. Lewis Stephens came in for his debut amongst a number of changes

Both sides struggled to control the ball on a bone hard terrible playing surface with the ball only travelling a few inches before bobbling up and players losing control. Despite this welfare once again failed to take control against a team lower than them in the league table.

Robbie Savage had the first real chance of the game for the home side in the first 10 minutes but his shot was hit high and wide.

Welfare had a goal disallowed for offside before taking the lead on 15 minutes. Zivanai Mbire saw his cross into the penalty area handled by Mitchell Wilson and Poskitt stepped up to easily beat Levi Owen.

Minutes after, Owen, home supporters player of the year did well to palm a Sam Pashley first time effort for a corner.

Welfare had other half chances in the half with Poskitt having a shot blocked and Stephens heading a Matt Semley cross wide and then Owen just beat Mbire to claim a loose ball.

The home side only had one real chance when Aaron Williamson shot at goal but sent the ball wide and the chance was lost.

The second half opened with Will Dodds coming close with a first time 35 yards effort that was inches over Alex Ward's crossbar. Ward then managed to block an effort on the edge of the penalty area as welfare came under pressure.

Welfare were hardly a threatening force in the second period with only Semley having a shot which went wide.

At the other end Carter Widdowson was causing problems for the welfare defence with his free kicks after needless welfare fouls. Ward fumbled one away for a corner and then held another as attackers went in on him. Another kick was headed just wide of the angle of bar and post and with the last kick of the game, Ward spilled another Widdowson free kick which was hacked away by the welfare defenders.

Darren Holmes commented after the game, "Today finished a very good week for us points wise. Two very good battling performances and maximum points. .like Tuesday, today was never going to be first on match of the day as the pitch was terrible and very difficult to play any sort of flowing football on .It was about working hard putting, the ball in the right areas and forcing mistakes.
There were very few chances created by either side but I thought we defended anything they created very well, .We forced an error and Ryan put his penalty away very well. Considering we had quite a few regulars missing the lads that came in did very well. All in all a win is a win and credit to the lads. We can feel very pleased with a week. We now need to push on and finish the season on a high."
