GNE came out the blocks slowly, kicking against the breezy Surrey Street conditions. It was the visitors Ramsbottom who had the lions share of the play in the early stages. Balls played forward to Ryan Jennings were causing problems for GNE. In the 10th minute a long bouncing ball was played through the GNE defence and initially punched half clear by goalkeeper Morgan Bacon. However the GNE keeper was then alleged to have brought down the attacker in the box and Referee Matthew Tyers pointed to the spot. Michael Fitzgerald successfully converted from the spot kick to give the visitors the lead and put GNE on the back foot. The hosts response however was strong, with chances from Keaton Mulvey and Harry Freedman getting shots away, albeit to no avail.
The conditions were proving difficult for GNE against the wind, but slowly the Hillmen started to find their stride and got back into the game when a failed defensive clearance fell at the feet of Louis White, who slotted a low left footed shot into the bottom corner to equalize for GNE.
The half time interval came with the scores level at 1-1.
The next goal in the game was proving to be very crucial in the game and GNE came out the blocks in the second half and started to take the game to the visitors who defended deeply and resolutely. GNE had more chances through Jacques Etia, and Keaton Mulvey to take the lead, however these were to no avail. In the end it was a set piece goal that allowed GNE to take the lead in the game. A corner from the right was delivered well by Sam Barratt, the ball flew over the reach of the Ramsbottom keeper, before a scramble in the box led to Harry Freedman firing home in the crowded penalty area. The remaining 15 minutes of the game were largely well managed by GNE as they saw the game out. Late mele in the center circle late in injury time saw GNE defender Ekow Coker see the red card, but GNE held out for 3 points at Surrey Street this afternoon.
