Glossop North End 2-0 Market Drayton

Delight for Debut Duo!

A home win at long last for the Hillmen and perhaps more importantly, a performance that should give real encouragement to the faithful fans who turned out in the decisively Autumnal conditions.

The game began in a scrappy fashion with neither team settling into their stride as quickly as they would've liked. Pete Band's Glossop team contained a few debutants and some other new players with just a handful of appearances under their belts. Despite this, there seemed to be a real togetherness on the pitch and a harmony between the touchline and the field of play. There was real direction from the dugout and it looked to be a matter of time before Glossop kicked into a rhythm.

A string of corners for Market Drayton posed a potential problem for the home side, but they survived unscathed with Russell Saunders organising his box with authority. Two real scares came soon after as Glossop were forced to clear one effort off the line and then watch helplessly as a tapped shot trickled towards the goal before finding its way on to the base of the post.

Up the other end, Jack Touhy was denied by the Market Drayton keeper, who pulled off a heroic double save to keep the scores level.

The home fans wouldn't have to wait much longer to see their side go ahead. Dominic Marie, making his debut today, finished off a wave of attack that was only ever going to end up with a Glossop goal. One nil up at half time and well deserved too.

The second half commenced with Glossop looking buoyant and two yards ahead of their opponents all over the pitch. In the early months of this season, the 'long ball' label was a constant criticism of the Glossop team, with some fans lamenting that it showed a lack of quality and purpose. The second goal, which came from a sublime long ball from right to left, was created and converted with the perfect blend of both of those things, quality and purpose. The quality of the pass was superb, as was the control from debutant scorer Adam Latham and the purpose of the move was clear for all to see. Latham plucked the ball out of the air with the deftest of touches that meant he didn't have to break his stride at all. His pace was far too much for his marker to deal with and the finish was full of confidence and accuracy. A great goal to put daylight between the teams under the floodlights at Surrey Street.

The final stages of the game were disrupted by the building wind and Market Drayton didn't show much to suggest they might find a way back into it. A few half chances came and went for Glossop and a few more familiar faces got minutes towards the end of the action but a great day for Pete Band's newly assembled Hillmen team.

Off the foot of the table and three points at home.
