"Say it's true, it's true, And we can break through" - U2 (New Years Day)

A new year presented a new chance for Glossop to impress on the road, this time at Colne. Glossop put in several impressive away performances towards the back end of 2018 without always getting the result they deserved, and underneath splendid winter sunshine which would turn to cold clear skies, they hoped to avoid a repeat of the reverse of this fixture from earlier on in the season. ‘Colne too good for Hillmen’ the headlines read that time around. A chance to put the record straight this time then.

Early on, Jack Tuohy showed promise that he might be the man to make a difference again, as he spun and aimed at goal with his left foot from the edge of the box. This was closely followed by a near miss from Glossop’s Cody Roberto sliding in at the near post but Glossop had definitely started the brightest. Roberto didn’t stop running for the Hillmen today and his efforts can’t have gone unnoticed by teammates and management alike.

Colne eventually found their feet in the game and they soon struck Russell Saunders’ post after a slick through ball down the left hand side. The chance left Glossop questioning each other across the back line, but the demand for high standards can only be a good thing.

Glossop got their reward for a good start around the half hour mark as Jack Tuohy slid in to finish off a chance that looked to have gone begging. It was the hard work of Pete Boyle that created the opportunity for Tuohy, as he kept the ball alive on the byline with sheer determination before cutting it back.

A very soft penalty appeal for he hosts was waved away in the last few minutes of a half which ended with the visitors holding a well deserved one nil lead.

Into the second 45 and Colne found themselves on top for the first time in the match. Kane Hickman was putting his body on the line for the Hillmen though and it wasn’t long before Colne frustrations boiled over and saw them put in a very bad tackle on Jack Tuohy. This followed a studs up tackle in the first half that was out of control at best, but was met with the same punishment of just a yellow card.

Glossop were then denied a penalty that seemed just as soft an appeal as Colne’s earlier shout.

A warning came when Colne substitute Mamadou Djabj jinked in from wide left and fired wide of Glossop’s near post but it was starting to look like a real uphill task for the men in red, such was the dominance and resilience of the Glossop back four and their midfield protectors.

Stand out performer Tuohy forced another save as Glossop broke before an outstanding late save from Russell Saunders all but confirmed the points for the Hillmen.

Colne roller the dice and threw men forward but Glossop continued to deal with the pressure and even survived a few nervy penalty area scrambles in time added on.

A brave performance and a well deserved result is the best way to get 2019 underway for Glossop as they look to continue climbing up that table.
