WARRIORS LOST IN THE STORM

Leicester Storm snapped a three match losing streak with a repeat of the 32-26 win they secured over the Warriors back in April

This was a different kind of game to last month’s with the Warriors leading three times during the first half but once the Storm had their noses in front midway through the second period, the Warriors could not reel them in to earn consecutive wins for the first time this season.

Alex Williams, son of former Warriors assistant coach and player Sonnie, scored the crucial try four minutes from the end. It was his second of the game and the powerful second row also spent time in the sin-bin as tempers briefly flared in the second period.

The Warriors had the best of the opening minutes and Dale Cooper opened the scoring in the third minute profiting from an error by full back Jack Williams who misjudged Liam Rice-Wilson’s high kick. Alex Hoyle was then held up over the line and the Storm hit back with Mark White ploughing over to level the scores.

The Warriors edged back in front when Luke Stephens muscled his way over from close range then Brad Kislingbury had a try disallowed and the Storm went up the other end where Alex Williams strode through after a Storm move had appeared to break down.

With the last move of the half, the Warriors tried a trick play which came off when Hoyle acrobatically claimed Rice-Wilson’s kick downfield from a midfield scrum and scampered to the posts. Rice-Wilson added his third goal of the day.

The Storm drew level again five minutes into the second period when Curtis Wellington finished out wide during a period when Hoyle and the Storm’s Reece Williams and Alex Williams were all in the sin-bin.

When Wellington scored again and Josh West touched down rather too easily with Lewis Chapman adding his fourth goal the Storm led by ten points with 16 minutes to go.

However, the Warriors began to play as if there were only six minutes left and wasted some excellent field position with poor options brought on by panic.

Finally, Hoyle went over for a try after Cooper had worked an overlap and then excellent hands on the last tackle after Joel James’ clever chip had got them behind the Storm line led to Kislingbury scoring.

Crucially, Ash Lewis could not convert either try and the Storm took a two point lead into the final few minutes before Williams popped up to crash over for the winning score.
